I know it may seem like a silly question, but what is the main difference between instagram's algorithm and tiktok's algorithm? Why does content that performs well on one platform not necessarily do well on the other?
Not a silly question at all. The key difference between Instagram's and TikTok's algorithms comes down to how they prioritize content and cater to user behavior. TikTok is all about discovery—its algorithm is designed to push fresh content from a wide range of creators onto your For You Page, even if you don’t follow them. It’s highly focused on what users engage with, like watching a video to the end, liking, commenting, or sharing. This means even smaller or new creators can go viral quickly if they create engaging, trend-driven content. On the other hand, Instagram leans more heavily on showing you posts from people you already follow, and engagement with your existing audience (likes, comments, time spent on the post) plays a big role in how much reach your content gets. While Instagram is trying to catch up with features like Reels and the Explore page, it's still more of a follower-based platform. The type of content that works best on each platform also differs. TikTok thrives on fast-paced, entertaining videos with less "production", often tied to trends or challenges, and it's designed to keep users constantly discovering new things. The identity of the creator matters less than the content itself. Instagram, however, is more about personal connections and polished content. Whether it's images, carousels, or longer-form videos, users tend to expect more curated and aesthetic posts. So, a video that blows up on TikTok might not perform as well on Instagram if it doesn’t align with Instagram's more curated and relationship-based experience. The key is to adapt your content style to match the strengths and expectations of each platform. Make sense?
For the videographers and video editors in the group, what are your best tips on creating cinematic reels? What accounts do you follow for inspiration?
