AMA Google Ads - November 2024

Hi, in a previous video you talked about raising the ROAS to high too fast can smother an account. I believe this is what happened to my account. The Search campaign which was at 163% in August gradually dropped to 58% in early November. Google auto recommendations had also been applied which switched the keywords to broad match pushing cost up and CVR down. The canpaign was paused and a new simpler campaign with one ad group and phrase match keywords was set up. This has just come out of learning a couple of days ago and is at 90% ROAS. My question is can you revive a 'smothered' account and how, or should you just start again? We need a ROAS of at least 300% to be profitable and cannot increase the budget until then. Our PMax campaign is currently at 123% with a 126% target and about to increase target to 135%. Our small budget is split 40/60 between Search and Pmax for a niche medical product that costs £18 so CPC has to be way lower than it currently is. We have 'paused' the ad manager in charge of the account and this is now fully in my lap with a three month goal to get to profitability so any advice gratefully received!

September's AMA answers are now uploaded to YouTube! I go on a bit of rant with the first question by Tammy. Sorry to anyone where you might not feel I answered your question fully and instead start ranting - I'm prone to go down rabbit holes especially when riffing Q&As like this. Hope you all get some value and I hope to see you on October's AMA which I will post the thread for questions towards the weeks of the 21st. @Tammy Bridges @Vijay Kumar Pathipaka @Jacek Pyziak @Rob Sanders @Mohamed Tefridj @Lawrence Pryor @Ashley Longoria @Caro Rios @Alley Hassen @Tommy G @Nichol Low @Jami Leclerc @Planters Exchange @Matt McCormick @Dave Christie @Charisse M @Krushna Sharma @Gabriela Morosanu @Jim Hamiod @Amanda Coleman

Thank you for the feedback @Austin LeClear , I will look into what you advised. Often our only competitor on PMax is Amazon. I have only just started looking into the weeds of our accounts, feel like I have opened a horrific yet strangely compelling Pandora's Box.....
Hello fellow PPC sufferers!
Hi, just joined the community. Our Company is AirDrate, my title is Sales & Marketing Director. We are a UK founder owned start up, launched in Dec 2023 and have had a steep learning curve with PPC! Soaking up as much knowledge as possible, love the videos - they are the easiest to consume, understand and most relevant I have come across. Our product is extremely niche and we struggle to get agencies to understand the implications of this. Looking forward to discussions and respectful informed advice always welcome!

Hi @Enoch B yeah I can see the challenge could be addictive! We have developed and sell a new science earplug that guarantees to prevent Airplane Ear pain. So pretty niche.

@Enoch B Yes that is part of the strategy however there is volume searching for a solution as nothing out there at the moment works. Extremely small self funded budget for now so concentrating on bottom of funnel searches to generate revenue. Was feeling the ad agency’s PMax / Search strategy wasn’t correct at the moment was giving it time but realising after @Austin LeClear vidoes my instinct was correct and now leaning to Manual CPC and better brand set up. Need to get tracking sorted first though so data correct. 👍🏻
GoogleTag
so i had somebody tell me my Campaigns (search, shopping and pmax) were not performing at optimum levels because my Google Tag is either incorrect or not installed correctly. They said if installed correctly, it provides feedback back to Google campaigns to help finding "my" audience. He said my conversions were sporatic because google has no feedback from our Site (?) Is this a possibility? I thought that why we sent Google Audiences and Signals and email lists etc. Any feedback on this would be appreciated. I'm running out of tequila.

This can be true yes, if the tag is not installed correctly it won’t report conversions correctly and Google won’t be able to learn what converts best for your ads. We were only reporting 40% of our actual due to Google Tag issues. We are now switching to server side tracking.

PMAX Product Report Not Matching Cost
I've got some major issues in a couple of campaigns where ROAS has just tanked (these are long running campaigns that have historically been doing well). I was trying to evaluate the products in the campaign (we have a large catalog of about 10K products so have products broken up into campaigns by product type). I looked at results from Sept 1 - today and it shows our cost is around $4K. I went to the products tab and selected the same date range to evaluate if I had items that were getting a lot of clicks and no revenue. When I exported that report it showed my total cost at like $500. How is this so far off? Am I not looking at something correctly?

Hi @Mandi Snyder what type of campaigns are you running? I think that product reports only show shopping ads results, not display ads etc, so this might explain it?

@Mandi Snyder So I believe that product reports only show results from the shopping ads, not display, search, etc - all the other types of ad in PMax. Have you looked at asset groups to see what is converting?
