Do you believe there are certain lessons that are YOUR lessons to learn?
Throughout my life I've had recurring themes around being heard - and ignored - or not heard at all. But if you wait around for someone to listen before you begin using your voice - you'll never speak.
I have several memories of standing up to bullies in school, who were picking on other kids. Using my voice to advocate for someone came pretty naturally - even if it was scary. Even if the quiet one standing up and shouting surprised everyone. It surprised me.
More recently I had a lightbulb moment 馃挕 that I was sort of conditioned to think of advocacy as something that exists inside of resistance, or conflict. But that's not true! It was just an unconscious belief.
You can absolutely "advocate" for yourself in a proactive way. You'll open more doors, promote your message, make more connections, and get more of what your want (not just less of what you don't.)
But you have to go first. Even if no one is listening (yet.)
Today's lesson is clearly inspired by this quote that takes up space rent free in my mind:
"Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes." Maggie Kuhn
