I remember the days...
Where I'd be awake for HALF THE HOURS π during the night...
I would be WIDE awake, UNABLE to drift off to SLEEP.
Tossing and turning π, tossing and turning, nothing was WORKING..
I was THINKING at the time "When will I get to sleep? Will I get to sleep at all?"
More often that NOT, I'd be lying there awake for another few hours before I'd have to get up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure you can relate to this bro, it's a PAINFUL π€ experience to have.
When you're just lying there, expecting to drift off to sleep but you CAN'T.
π This POST will SOLVE THAT PROBLEM!
π ACTIONABLE STEP: Read ALL THE WAY THROUGH THIS POST!
If you wake up in the middle of the night again, I guarantee you, you'll be able to fall back asleep again in 15 MINUTES or LESS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instead of TOSSING and TURNING and EXPECTING to go to sleep at some point, HERE'S WHAT YOU DO:
Get out of BED! Do something RELAXING! π
Why should we do that? It seems counterintuitive does it?
Well, no.
From personal experience, when I wake up in the middle of the night now (which doesn't happen often)
- I'll get up, do something relaxing π for five minutes or so, then the deep urge to fall back asleep hits.
- Then, I'll go back to bed, and fall asleep near INSTANTLY.
This is what SHOULD HAPPEN, rather than you just lying there for HOURS awake.
Here's WHY you should get out of BED and DO something RELAXING if you're wide AWAKE at night:
- When you're in your bed AWAKE, it creates SUBCONSCIOUS associations π§ where you'll start to think overtime, that your bed ππ» PURELY isn't just a sleeping place. So, your brain is less likely to associate bed with sleeping, and more likely to associate bed with being awake.
- To BREAK those associations, you NEED to get out of BED if you're awake in the middle of the night and DO SOMETHING RELAXING!
You could do relaxing things such as:
- π§ Meditating
- π Reading
- π€ΈββοΈ Doing some gentle stretches
Do NOT turn on the lights, and DO NOT turn on any artificial devices π±. This will PURGE your brain of the sleepy chemicals and hormones which make you want to be SLEEPY π€ (melatonin, adenosine).
- Once you get into the habit of doing this CONSISTENTLY when you WAKE UP in the MIDDLE of the NIGHT, your brain will start to BREAK these associations between bed = awake, and reform bed = sleep associations (to put it into simple terms)
- And you'll find overtime as you do this, you'll WAKE UP in the MIDDLE of the NIGHT WAY LESS!
π ACTIONABLE STEP: Next time you wake up in the middle of the night, go up and do a relaxing activity for 5, 10, 15 minutes, however long it takes till you feel that deep sleep urge (drowsiness) come back, then go back to sleep.
Make this into a HABIT, and you'll BREAK THE ASSOCATIONS!! πͺπͺ
Hope I could help! π
