Gorilla Glue Strain (aka GG4)
A heavy-handed yet balanced hybrid, the Gorilla Glue #4 strain, also called GG4, Gorilla Glue is a powerful cannabis strain known for inducing peppery euphoria. A special delivery of serious relaxation, this is the one you reach for when you want to feel stuck to the couch.
Damn I love Gorilla Glue -- it's such a heavy high.
Gorilla Glue/GG4 Benefits/Effects
The relaxing, predictable, 50%/50% indica-sativa balanced hybrid effects of the Gorilla Glue strain produces some deep stoney euphoria, perfect for a smooth evening at home. With high THC levels and very little CBD, Gorilla Glue seeds create a fabulous, mind-blazing euphoria and serious full-body relief that can feel slightly indica dominant.
With high THC levels of up to 29% and 22% on average, GG4 is a potent enough marijuana strain to create an army of adherents (see what we did there?). Certain varieties have other minor cannabinoids like CBD—see our discussion of the terpenes and cannabinoid profile below—although overall GG4 is a notable medical marijuana strain more for its high THC content.
Gorilla Glue really swept the scene in 2014, taking first place in both the Los Angeles and Michigan Cannabis Cups and the High Times Jamaican World Cup. These days, it’s one of the standards on the market today, and a top three for many consumers and patients.
Looking for a serious buzz that hits your head like…well, like a 400 pound gorilla? Yes, GG4 does the trick.
GG4 Medical Benefits
Having trouble getting a decent meal in—either because you’re just too stressed, or just too sick? Gorilla Glue can help you get that appetite back, dealing out some serious munchies, in the best possible way.
Gorilla Glue is another awesome nightcap choice. You’re going to feel happy—not silly or stupid, but content and at peace like you imagine that rich guy in the leather chair with the snifter of brandy feels, only way better.
According to customer reviews, medical marijuana patients often choose Gorilla Glue and GG strains as mild sedatives. They might also use it to treat cramps, insomnia, migraines, pain, and stress. The full body effects Gorilla Glue is known for is excellent for all of those issues, and its high THC level adds a dose of carefree euphoria.
Some medical users also swear by Gorilla Glue for treating muscle spasms and gum disease, but its lower CBN and CBD content means that it is less useful for some neurological disorders. On the other hand, plain old chronic pain, anxiety, and stress are right in the zone for Gorilla Glue.
Remember, if you’re treating depression or anxiety in particular with Gorilla Glue, higher levels of THC can mean cerebral effects that really grip you and last. Although for most users this isn’t an issue, if you’re a first time user of a heavy hitter like Gorilla Glue, start low and go slow—and be ready for that head high to last for several hours. Over consuming Gorilla Glue or anything with too much THC for you personally might make medical conditions like stress or anxiety worse.
Another reminder: that couch lock is coming. Once you are in deep body relaxation mode, you won’t exactly be super productive, and you could even feel sleepy. On the other hand, you will not care.
GG4 Taste and Smell
The smell of Gorilla Glue is a treat just like a truly fine wine can be for a true fan. It’s complex and multi-layered, with hints of sweet moss, bright citrus, dark roasted coffee, and pine. Soil, skunk, and earth will underlie each version of Gorilla Glue.
You might not expect it from anything with “glue” in the name, but one of the best things about Gorilla Glue is the flavor! In fact, one of the top reasons people choose these Gorilla Glue seeds is to grow their own for making edibles. This is the perfect strain for edibles, because its higher THC range means you get more punch for every bite, and Gorilla Glue itself lends coffee, spice, and chocolate notes to whatever you’re making.
The proof is in the tasting, with Gorilla Glue. As we said, these are awesome, chunky buds—when you grow it right. Some growers cut corners and overuse nutrients to attempt to make their nugs resemble the big, fat, tasty thing. But salty, flat-tasting versions of Gorilla Glue are just plain wrong. Expect deeply satisfying flavor from this pungent strain every time, from sweet, earthy pine to sour, peppery, citrus, aromas. Herbal is good, grassy is not.
GG4 Cannabinoid/Terpene Profile
Typical THC levels of GG4 are at least 22 percent—no joke. CBD levels are typically low, less than 1%, although some varieties have notable levels of CBG in particular. These higher levels of THC can mean typical side effects such as dry eyes or dry mouth.
In general, GG4 is high in Caryophyllene, moderate in Limonene and Myrcene, with smaller amounts of Humulene.
Caryophyllene, the only terpene that binds to the CB2 receptors, is known to be an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This powerful terpene can help relieve anxiety, OCD, stress, and pain, and offers a boost to the immune system.
Limonene is known for its uplifting energizing effects, offering stress and anxiety relief, and enhancing the mood. It is also an antifungal and antibacterial, and improves digestion. Myrcene is known for soothing, herbal benefits and shares many of the pain relieving qualities as these other terpenes.
Humulene boasts many of the same pain soothing benefits as these other terpenes, and it may also help an overactive appetite.
Gorilla Glue #4/GG4 History and Genetics
Like many great strains, Gorilla Glue was originally a fabulous accident. Its parent strains are Sour Dubb x Chem Sis (also called Chem’s Sister) and Chocolate Diesel, a sativa-dominant hybrid and relative of the famous Sour Diesel, but it only happened at all when a rogue plant when hermaphrodite and ruined a garden—or started something bigger.
This strange Sour Dubb x Chem Sis x Chocolate Diesel mashup may not have been in anyone’s plans. But it soon became apparent to growers who tried trimming the plants just how potent it was likely to be!
Anyway, years later plants grown from that actual cross became Gorilla Glue. Each modern version of the strain has been bred to be even better—improved by design after the original “oops” moment.
These days you will see the Gorilla Glue hybrid strain being used by cultivators to create lots of amazing new strains like Original Glue. Any new offering with “glue” in the name is almost certainly related to Gorilla Glue.
If You Love GG4 Marijuana, Try These Strains
If you love the effects of Sherbert but want more relaxation, GG4 cannabis is a great strain. If you love either the happy high or medical benefits of Platinum Girl Scout Cookies, but want something that’s tinglier and even more in the body, GG4 is a perfect choice.
If you like the party Gelato and Wedding Cake throw in your Brain—and love to be rid of that anxiety for a while, too—GG4 is another excellent choice. And if you enjoy Purple Punch or Blue Dream but want more spicy medical relief, go for some GG4. The glue name really fits the effect, that feeling is sticky and stays with you.
Growing the Gorilla Glue #4/GG4 Strain
Gorilla Glue seeds are what you grow when you cannot afford to mess around. Bonus: the buds are super chunky and get a cool, thick frost of trichomes that’s a little silverback-esque. If you can see underneath that white coat of goodness you’ll notice light green and fiery orange hairs.
Gorilla Glue seeds are ideal for both new growers and experts, with a short flowering time of 8 weeks and an easy growing cycle. The yield of 16 to 18 ounces per three by three foot growing space isn’t huge, but at this THC and quality level—and with a growing cycle this short—things really even out.
Growing these chunky, resin-covered buds from seed can make anyone feel like a rockstar, because they are impressive. The Gorilla Glue strain is a great grow for everyone, from beginner to expert. The ILGM grow guide is absolutely the place to start.
Whether you use feminized Gorilla Glue seeds or their autoflowering cousins, flowering is triggered by shorter days in fall (or inside) and the entire growing cycle including veg and flowering is a short 8 weeks. Whether you grow outdoors or in a greenhouse/inside, know that in the kind of warm, arid environment free from extreme weather fluctuations Gorilla Glue seeds prefer, these plants will resist just about any disease. They’ll also yield about 18 to 21 ounces of usable crop per square meter depending on how long it flowers.
