My Favourite Season is Fall........
The Perfect Time for Hunting, Adventure, and Connection to Nature! Fall is more than just a change in weather and a transformative season that brings a deep connection to the land, the wildlife, and the traditions passed down through generations! Fall is the ultimate season for hunting and outdoor survival. It's when the wilderness opens up its best opportunities for those who can move with nature!
Here's why fall is my absolute favourite season and why you should embrace its magic!
1. Fall is Primetime for Hunting 🏹
As a hunter, fall is the season where everything aligns perfectly. Wildlife, especially big game like deer, moose, and elk, is more active during the fall, making it prime hunting season. The cooler temperatures drive animals out to forage more, and the fall rut (mating season) increases their movement and visibility.
Stat: According to the National Deer Association, the fall rut in North America accounts for over 70% of all deer activity, making this time crucial for hunters looking to harvest a trophy buck.
For me, the thrill of the hunt is not just about the challenge but about honouring nature's cycle. Fall hunting is about patience, strategy, and respect for the land and animals, central to the Indigenous way of life!
2. Perfect Outdoor Conditions 🌤️
Unlike the sweltering heat of summer or the biting cold of winter, fall offers the perfect balance of temperatures for outdoor activities. The cool air is refreshing, keeping you comfortable while you move through the wilderness, whether hiking, tracking game, or setting up camp.
Fact: Studies show that temperatures between 50-70°F (10 and 21°C) are ideal for strenuous outdoor activities, as your body doesn't overheat and can function more efficiently. The comfortable climate in fall also allows for longer days outdoors, with fewer insects and less harsh sun exposure, making it the perfect season for spending extended time in the bush.
3. Easier Navigation Through the Bush 🍂
One of the greatest advantages of fall is that the foliage starts to thin out. With leaves falling from the trees, it becomes much easier to navigate through dense forests. This makes tracking game and spotting wildlife far easier than in the summer when thick vegetation can obscure your vision and slow movement.
Fact: Thinner foliage means up to 30% better visibility in some forested areas, according to studies from forestry experts. This makes it much easier to spot wildlife at a distance.
With the forest floor now carpeted in fallen leaves, you also gain better traction and quieter movements, which is crucial for hunters trying to stay stealthy while stalking prey.
4. The Natural Beauty of Fall 🍁
Fall is arguably the most beautiful season of the year. The vibrant colours of the changing leaves, the crisp air, and the golden light of autumn make every moment in nature feel special. The sights and sounds of fall remind us of the cyclical nature of life. As the trees shed their leaves, we, too, let go of the old to make room for new growth!
For Indigenous peoples, the fall season has always been a time to prepare for winter and gather food, supplies, and strength. It’s a time of reflection, connecting with the land, and ensuring readiness for the challenges ahead. This deep connection to the earth and its cycles is part of why fall holds such a special place in my heart!
5. Wildlife Behaviour Shifts in Fall 🦌
Fall brings dramatic shifts in wildlife behaviour, especially during the rut season for many big game animals like moose and deer. During this time, animals are more vocal, active, and territorial, making it easier for hunters to track and locate them.
Unknown Fact: During the rut, deer are 70% more likely to be active during the day, so many hunters experience the most success during this time of year. For someone like me, who respects the balance of nature, understanding these shifts is essential to successful and respectful hunting. Fall is when the forest becomes alive with movement, and being part of that natural rhythm is a privilege.
6. Preparing for Winter Survival ❄️
Fall is also a critical time to prepare for the harshness of winter. It’s a season of gathering, learning, and honing survival skills that will carry you through the colder months. Fall is about readiness and resourcefulness, from foraging for late-season plants to stocking up on game. It represents a time of mental and physical preparation. The wilderness tests us, and fall is the season that provides both the beauty and the challenge needed to thrive!
Why Fall is More Than Just a Season?
Faisn'tn’t about the weather or the leaves but about transformation for the land and ourselves. The wilderness opens up, providing the ideal conditions for hunting, survival, and reflection. For those who know how to move with nature, fall offers the perfect opportunity to reconnect, learn, and prepare for what lies ahead!
Whether you’re an experienced outdoorsman or just getting started, fall offers the perfect conditions to explore the wilderness, challenge yourself, and experience the deep connection only nature can offer!
So, take advantage of this season! Step into the woods, feel the crisp air and discover the magic of fall through the eyes of a Native! 🍂🏹
