Guide to Efficient Mixing and Mastering Using Templates
Why Templates Matter
Using templates in FL Studio can significantly cut down the time it takes to mix and master your songs. By setting up a custom template, you eliminate repetitive setup tasks, allowing you to focus on creativity and quality.
Template Structure Overview
The template I’ve developed is fairly advanced and customized, designed to save time with each project. Here’s how it’s structured:
1. Organized Layout for Key Elements:
- Volume Automation Slot:** A designated slot to manage overall volume levels.
- Tag Slot: A dedicated slot for tagging to help with quick identification.
- Audio Inserts: Three inserts reserved for any audio files, typically used for melodies.
- Pattern Tracks: About 10 pattern tracks, each dedicated to a specific instrument, commonly for drum elements.
2. Additional Tracks for Versatility:
- Additional Audio Tracks: Five extra tracks for elements like drum fills, transitions, or any additional audio layers.
- Routing and Instrument Linkage: Each audio or pattern track is pre-routed to a mixer track and linked to an instrument in the pattern view. For instance, "blank no. 1" in the mixer aligns with "blank no. 1" in the pattern view, ensuring changes made in one place are reflected throughout.
3. Automatic Naming and Routing:
- When a sample or instrument (like the Spinz 808) is added, it automatically renames the corresponding mixer and playlist slots. This eliminates the need for manual labeling, which can be time-consuming.
4. Pre-Set Effects and Processing:
- EQ on Each Channel:** Every channel has an EQ loaded, but it remains inactive until needed. This allows quick access to EQ settings when necessary without any initial impact on the sound.
- Soft Clipper on Master Channel: The master channel includes a soft clipper to prevent audio levels from surpassing 0dB, protecting both headphones and speakers from potential distortion.

Benefits of Using This Template
With this setup, a lot of the preparatory work is already done. This template provides:
- Pre-routed Tracks: Instruments and audio files are automatically routed and ready to process without additional configuration.
- Instant Arrangement: Patterns are laid out and ready for arrangement once you’ve completed your initial 8-bar loop.
- Consistent Audio Levels: The soft clipper ensures clean output without distortion.
- Reduced Setup Time: Everything from labeling to routing is prepared, so you can dive straight into the creative aspects of beat-making and mixing.
Creating Your Own Template
If you want to build your own template, here’s a quick process to get started:
1. Organize Your Layout: Decide on slots for your main elements like volume, audio inserts, and pattern tracks.
2. Pre-route Tracks: Link each element to a mixer and ensure names align across all views.
3. Add Pre-set Effects: Load EQs on each channel (turned off initially) and set up a soft clipper on the master channel.
Using a Pre-Made Template
