Police Chicago - Luis Huesca ( RIP )
By Chris Anderson
On April 21, 2024, Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca was on his way home from his shift at roughly 3:30am. Officer Huesca was in his uniform when he was attacked by a robbery crew. The offenders shot him, took his star, took his gun, took his jeep, and took his life.
They left him on the street to die as they fled the scene. Chicago police were first notified of the precise spot where the gunshots were detected by ShotSpotter. On May 1, 2023, Chicago Police Officer Areanah Preston was murdered outside her home. Officer Preston was returning home from her shift at work. Officer Preston was in uniform. At roughly 1:40am an armed robbery crew gunned her down and robbed her.
They took her belongings, they took her firearm, and they took her life. They left her there to die as they fled the scene and continued on their way with no remorse. ShotSpotter alerted police to the incident.
Four offenders with extensive criminal backgrounds were subsequently arrested and charged for her murder. Two heroic and promising lives senselessly taken away from us less than a year apart. Both murders, strikingly similar to each other. If crime patterns hold true, the offenders will have violent criminal backgrounds. That is, unless the court system has automatically expunged them…
After Officer Preston's murder, I thought that would be the catalyst to effect change in this city from violent crime. That murder could have been prevented if those offenders were held accountable for their previous crimes.
However with criminal justice reform and the lack of any accountability within that system, nothing changed. Armed robbery crews did not bat an eye and continued their increase in crime sprees throughout the city, leading to last night's horrific tragedy. There was a time when if you knew your victim was a cop, you moved on to another victim who wasn't armed and wouldn't bring about that much heat.
Those days are over as the dangerous anti-police rhetoric continues. Both of these officers were in Chicago Police Department uniforms. There was no question that they were Chicago police officers. The offenders shot them, disarmed them, robbed them, and killed them with this knowledge.
The criminals act with no fear of consequences because they know that our court system allows them to easily escape punishment. Crime strategies have been reintroduced by the police department to the public. Missing from this equation, once again, is the state's attorney's office.
The police department can have a solid plan to combat the rise in violent crime, but if the state's attorney's office does not prosecute and hold criminals accountable, it's all for nothing. Law and order...we need them both to be successful and safe. My heart breaks for the loss of another brother.
We must put an end to this insanity.Officer Luis Huesca, you should still be here.
