There are 70 different types of birth control methods that are covered by the BC government, 48 of which are the pill form. Of the pill forms 96% of them contain ethinyl estradiol which acts as "estrogen" and is used in addition to norgestimate (6/48), norethindrone (8/48), drospirenone (12/48), desogestrel (10/48), or levonorgestrel (14/48) to stop/suppress ovulation from a natural hormonal & reproductive cycle.
Why this is important is because we are hindering healthy functioning of the body. So we have to ask ourselves:
⭕ Why we are really on it?
⭕ What are the benefits and disadvantages? and;
🌟 What are the other options?
We'll also go over:

SO LET'S DIVE IN...
⭕Why are we really on it?⭕ Typically because of:
- Preventing pregnancy
- "Solving" period problems (aka, suppressing them)
- Not having to think about our period coming (if the form of HBC suppresses your bleed as well) or being bothered by it
All completely valid reasons, and those reasons also cross over into the "benefits."
So that leaves us with the ⭕disadvantages & side effects⭕
- swelling (edema),
- weakness,
- breakthrough bleeding,
- changes in weight or appetite,
- headache,
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- bloating,
- stomach cramps,
- breast tenderness or swelling,
- nipple discharge,
- freckles or darkening of facial skin,
- increased hair growth,
- loss of scalp hair,
- problems with contact lenses,
- vaginal itching or discharge,
- changes in your menstrual periods, or
- decreased sex drive.
Extreme Cases
- stroke
- blood clot
- heart attack
- liver problems
- increased blood pressure
- symptoms of depression

Now, I totally understand you might be thinking, "well I never get any side effects. None of the above apply to me." So I ask you:
- Are you happy with your weight?
- Are you tired of bloating?
- Do you get anxious thoughts in mind and spiral into a dark place?
- Do you have digestive issues?
- Do you get migraines often?
- Do you get mood AF right before you bleed?
Because I can tell you from experience and helping other women with their menstrual cycle and coming off HBC that these are all related to HBC.
Last question to ask yourself is:
- Do you feel healthy, thriving and juicy AF in your body?
Because HBC is going to blunt your attunement to your intuition and your body's natural way of absorbing micronutrients into your body. It is literally inhibiting you from being healthy, thriving & feeling juicy AF in your body.
I never felt ALIVE until I came off HBC and it felt like I could finally "taste the rainbow" and all colours came back to life and my body was turned on!!
🌟Here are some other options:🌟
- A small step would be to change to a non hormonal contraceptive (keep in mind these come with their fair share of side effects as well and still inhibit ovulation)
- Applications: condoms, caps or diaphragms
- Natural Contraception: BBT, Cervical mucus & cervix tracking, fertility charting
- Natural Birth Control, specifically Natural Cycles, which is FDA approved

These are all great alternatives to HBC and no matter where you're at on your journey, understanding your fertility window is quintessential to your sovereignty, knowing exactly when you can get pregnant so you can avoid or achieve it and help prevent accidents.
🌟How to actually solve your period problems🌟
- Period problems are all signs of hormonal imbalances.
- How do you detect what kind of imbalance? You can often get a good inclination yourself from the symptoms you are having and from there you can work with a GP or naturopath to get your hormones tested and from there they will tell you what's going on.
- Hormonal imbalances require holistic healing (as do most body "issues") because the body is a circular system, not a linear one.
- Which involves, physical, mental, nutritional, and spiritual health to all be taken into consideration.
- And thus, being a healing journey. No "one quick fix."
