Questions about goals
I am starting a new campaign this week. I am a little torn about player goals. Has anyone tried doing a set of party goals as well? I am wondering about how to do player goals in a way that the whole party is invested in so that it isn't just a campaign of continuous side quests.

@Jonah Fishel if you were to do a session -1 I would definitely watch it!
Goals as secrets?
We are about to do our session zero goal creation tomorrow. I did tell them that we would be creating them together at the table on our session -1. Now one of the players has written to me and says he wants his to be secret from the other players. Its a fairly straight forward goal, he wants to infiltrate to thieves guild, because they are copying an illegal substance that his family is the original creator of. I’m thinking he has to state a goal that he wants to infiltrate them to figure out where the substance is coming from, but he doesn’t have to mention his family. I just wanted an opinion on this, is that a fair way to handle it? And also stories from your own table if you’ve had something similar come up?

2nd time DM, first time proactive DM
Hello everyone, I've only ever ran LMoP(twice). It went alright, but both campaigns fizzled out after completion. I've read the book for proactive roleplaying, and will be having my session zero soon and I'm super nervous about trying the proactive method. I want to try creating a homebrewed campaign and wanted to ask some questions about goals and factions. Goals: Should the players try to align all their goals? I'm worried it will either feel like, we are doing one players goal at a time, in case that the others players goals are too far or not related. But then I also feel that if I have them try to align their goals all the time, its going to feel unorganic. Say that the midterm goals of finding the sword player 1 is looking for is the same place that player 2 is looking for his lost sister. Then they create new goals that also end up being resolved in the same place? I just want to get some tips on balancing it. Factions: How much should I tell players about faction? I will be creating them after they have set their goals, but should I give them an outline at some point before the game starts? or if they go to a new location, should I tell them what kind of factions operate here? Or should it just happen, as the characers explore the world? Sorry for the long post. Just a nervous DM, trying out this method for the first time. Bjørn

@Jonah Fishel Okey, I looked at your conflict posts and the session -1 video. I have created some factions, location and conflicts to try and quelm my nervousness. So could you maybe give me an opinion on this? Sorry that you have to beat this into my head for me. I'm going to be adding this to the session -1 sheet. Then I'm thinking if the players are interested we elaborate on these, and if not we create new ones. Gnolls occupying the ruins of Erin are fighting over territory with the Humans A religious order , wants to convert more people to their faith in "The Amber region". Mindflayers have been spotted near Mount Titanfall So now I have 3 locations, a couple of factions and conflict surrounding them. Would this be a good starting point?

@Jonah Fishel My idea with the gnolls is, that they are tryi g to resurrect the demon lord that created them long ago. An ancient item that they need for the ritual is in the hands of the humans. So the gnolls are trying to gain territory into the city in which it lies. So what I’m thinking with the mindflayers is that they are trying to get a foothold on the surface (as I don´t know if my players want an underdark campaign). Either by grabbing control of a ruler or converting a whole city into a part of the hivemind. The religious order I’m not really sure on and maybe wanted to keep it open ended so that the players might elaborate on it. But I’m either thinking that the religion is bad and once they have converted enough people, the’ll have a sort of blood sacrifice that the people won’t know they’re part of until it is too late. Or it is a well meaning religion, but what they are doing is taking away people’s autonomy of their lives. So they get assigned a station in life in which they must uphold and if the don’t they’re blasphemers and get cast out. Essentially turning their subjects into the slaves of the church in order to “save their lives” because otherwise they are damned souls. So this would be information I know. Then depending on player goals or what they add/change, npcs etc. They would more of this information through play

I love DnD and hav just finished proactive roleplaying. I’ve mostly played as a player, but have had a couple of sessions as a dm
