In the framework we discussed, a baby recognizes five primary ways of relating to the mother (or caregiver), each representing a different “object relationship”: 1. Sweet Mother – A source of comfort and warmth, meeting the baby’s needs reliably. 2. Frustrating Mother – An inconsistent source, leading to feelings of longing and unmet needs. 3. Rejecting Mother – Emotionally unavailable or unresponsive, creating a sense of rejection or unworthiness. 4. Exciting Mother – Gives attention in unpredictable, stimulating ways, fostering a craving for intensity and thrill. 5. Idealized Mother – Seen as perfect or all-powerful, becoming a source of safety and admiration. These different ways reflect the varied experiences a child may internalize and carry into future relationships, unconsciously seeking qualities they feel are missing within.
