Wildfire Season has Officially Started!
Hey Everyone, 3 year Wildland Fire Crewboss turned Fulltime Municipal Firefighter here! Just thought I’d make a quick post for anyone interested in working as a Wildland Firefighter. With the 2024 Wildfire Season Officially kicking off it’s drawn the attention to some who may want to work as a Fire Ranger, and as unfortunately it is to late to be hired for this season it’s never to early to starting preparing for the next season. With two prerequisites needing to be completed before you can apply in ontario. Firstly, the SP100 training course. Basically your “preservice for Wildland”. An approximately 4 day course that takes you through the science of wildfire, fire suppression tactics, helicopter sling training, camp operations and basic day to day fire line survival. This course is mandatory and costs roughly $1000 (can be reimbursed if hired) Secondly, the WFX-Fitness Test. A mandatory yearly evaluation of all active Wildland Firefighters to allow them to work. Cardio training is strongly encouraged. Costs roughly $150 (can be reimbursed if hired) These are the 2 MUSTS in order to get you ready for the next fire season, if there is anyone with more interest that is looking for more info on the job itself or application process, I would be more than happy to create more posts or speak individually to those interested!
