Q & A with Erin Brophey November 20th, 2024
This was a wonderful discussion. We dove deep into the uses of the TE Tuner. Thanks for the terrific question and prompt @Jill Cathey . @Carol Lowne had some great observations about using the metronome effectively. @Lorrie Smith brought up sound quality and staples. @William Kwiatkowski attended his first live masterclass- welcome!

I just had a chance to watch this - lovely to see you again, Carol☺️. Wonderful questions and discussions. I do use the Tonal Energy app in conjunction with the Andante app that Carol had introduced to me several months ago. I like the timer, recording, and drone function of the Andante along with the metronome function of the TE. @Lorrie Smith , I struggle with many of the same issues that you talked about. I too search for that ‘velvety’ sound, not always successfully😏. My teacher often points out to me that I need to play closer to the tip, along with bringing in the sides of the mouth - I was always thinking ‘whistle’, but I like your image of ‘kiss’ - maybe more of a ‘peck’? For what @Erin Brophey was referring to with the soft palette, I was struggling to figure out how to do that - I was trying to imagine grapefruits, but my mouth was thinking clementine. I read just recently someone’s description of trying to yawn with the mouth closed. That works for me - it allows me to feel the sensation of the soft palette lifting better than anything else I have tried. Now the trick is to be able to do that when I actually have an oboe in my mouth 😂.

Wonderful Session! Many thanks to @Magda Prins-Nip for her wonderful playing of Bach and great questions. Lovely to meet @Dorothy Rubinoff and hear about her oboe journey. Many thanks to @Natalie Fulwider for asking her questions about colour in oboe playing. ( one of my fave topics.) Sending best wishes to @Christi Allison that her wrist continues to heal. Kudos to @Valerie Rollheiser for being open to me asking pointed questions. :)

I watched this Masterclass yesterday and then this morning was in a zoom lecture on music and spirituality during which the presenter talked about Olivier Messiaen (I had not heard of him before today) and his colour chords. Now that is is coincidence! I decided to look him up and found this - thought you might find it interesting. I found it fascinating. https://youtu.be/uFt2szkRiGI?si=7b8054nrTwRDWNrf
