Introduction - Fractional Design Leader
Hey all, I joined a few weeks ago but just haven't gotten around to introducing myself yet. My name is Phil Schroeder and I've worked as a design consultant on and off over the last decade (https://www.gammuttdesign.com/). Due to recent layoffs, I pivoted and went full-time into consulting and fractional design leadership over the last year. I've worked with companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies on projects ranging from MVPs, redesigns, user research, design systems, feature implementations, and more. I excel at partnering with product owners, developers, and executives throughout the development lifecycle to deliver a best-in-class final product and quickly understand and translate business objectives into user-centered designs that also accomplish business objectives. My work has helped clients achieve over $39m in funding at various stages. @Cosmin Gabriel hello fellow creative! :) To be fair, my consulting/freelancing is going great. The fractional bit is what I want to be a larger part of my business and why I'm joining communities like this and talking to others to figure out how to get slowly get out of the consulting grind and basically be able to get paid more for fractional design work and advising so I can scale back overall hours while maintaining the same level of income. As for where I source a lot of my work (which is more standard IC consulting work) it's mostly from my network and Upwork actually. I've reached over $100k of earnings on Upwork and at this point is my best lead gen for IC type of work. I don't think there's really a market for fractional/advisor type of work there. My network is where I get the rest. I've been a designer in the tech space for over 12 years and am mildly active on LinkedIn so it's gotten to where people in my network might talk to someone and know that I freelance. Unfortunately, all of these leads are still IC oriented. I would love advice around how to get into conversations with my ICP which tends to be more director/vp/leaders of product or design leaders of small teams who don't have the bandwidth to do the things I would do for them. Startups are good too, I'm just as deeply involved in the startup communities and thus far usually when I work with a startup they want design work done not advice on how to set up a design team, how to stand up best practices, etc. So I'm definitely still figuring out how to get into the right rooms with the right people to pitch more fractional type of work instead of design deliverable work.
