Design Thinking, a process used to understand users and their problems and solve them effectively. The main goal of Design Thinking is to ensure you are building the right solution for users and it provides a structured framework for it through different stages: - Empathise: deeply understand the users, their needs and pain points. Methods used: interviews, observations, and empathy maps - Define: goal is to translate the user understanding gained during the Empathise stage into concrete problem statements. - Ideate: once the problem is defined, the goal is to generate potential solutions. The Ideate stage emphasises the quantity and creativity of ideas rather than focusing on their feasibility at this point. Methods used: Brainstorming, brainwriting, and storyboarding. - Prototype: creating tangible representations of the chosen solutions, allowing for user testing and feedback.Prototyping aims to validate whether the solutions effectively address the user's needs and identify potential usability issues before significant resources are invested in development. - Test: ?

How are Product Discovery and Design thinking connected? - I learned that Product Discovery's goal is to thoroughly understand user problems before creating solutions. - Design Thinking provides a structured framework for achieving this understanding. Is it correct? - Is Design Thinking enhance Product Discovery when a product has a visual/UI part? - And can Design Thinking still work without a UI, like in back-end systems (e.g., APIs for e-commerce functionalities like "add to cart," "price," etc.)? When adding a new feature, such as the e-com example "applying a freight charge", should we always go through a discovery phase to deeply understand the problem, or can we skip it and go straight to implementation?

How long should the discovery phase typically take in each of these scenarios—starting something new from scratch, addressing an underperforming product, etc.? How can we balance the need for a thorough discovery process with the need to deliver results quickly?

Product discovery is a process to deeply understand user needs and identify the best solutions while aligning with business goals. Rather than building a product, the focus is on determining what should be built. Conducting discovery phases continuously throughout the product lifecycle helps reduce risk, ensures alignment with business objectives, and meets customer needs. Frameworks for Product Discovery: - Double Diamond: 1) Problem Discovery: Start with broad exploration to gather information, then refine and define the problem clearly. 2) Solution Exploration: Generate multiple ideas, then narrow them down to the best-fit solutions for prototyping and testing. - JTBD: hire a product to fulfill a specific "job" and the benefit of that method. Discovery vs Delivery where in the Delivery phase build a product based on findings from discovery and gather feedback to iterate. User Research in Discovery: - Qualitative Research: Includes methods like user interviews and focus groups to understand user attitudes and behaviors. - Quantitative Research: Uses data (e.g. survey) and analytics to observe patterns and trends. A product manager is responsible for analyzing the insights gathered from user research and using those insights to make informed decisions about how to move forward.
