Hiring developers in the age of LLMs.
Anyone have any good experiences with hiring software developers in recent times? Previously I had a somewhat difficult, but work realistic challenge I'd give candidates and then go through their submission on a call. However, in recent times it's become impractical to do this, since people can just feed the challenge to an LLM and get a mostly workable solution. The issue isn't that they used AI for the challenge, but that whereas before I'd get only a handful of candidates who would complete the challenge, now I get 100s and I can't go through them all. A couple of months ago I tried mixing things up by interviewing whoever I felt was worth interviewing, then hiring them for a month trial period, where they'd work on a single "big" feature I wanted in production by the end of the month and / or a number of smaller ones if they finished it quickly. This was generally a decent approach, but it was too much work for me taking on 6 devs at the same time. I'm curious to hear about how others have been approaching this hiring devs and if you have any tips or advice that worked well for you?

That sounds like a challenge. I haven't hired anyone in a while, but what I have done that worked quite well was use a screening assessment for the final candidates to see how good a fit they would be. I think it was Profile XT and it assessed the candidate's thinking style, behavior style, interests and a few other things based on the type of candidate you are after. And I did hire great programmers, one stayed with me for a few years.

@Alex Zdanov I bought assessments through a reseller, an HR consultant who I knew. I didn't think they were costly, especially considering the long-term value they brought. An HR consultant may be able to help you. If you need a referral I have one.

Hi Qiang, I started my own business after a job offer I received (which had a nice career track) did not excite me much. The biz I started took a few years to become successful. One book that helped me was the E-myth Revisited. After a lot of preparation, I began hiring people to do jobs I was either not good at or didn't enjoy. Then the biz got better and better.

Since I haven't been engaged in the software world for a couple years, I like to collaborate on projects, how to handle challenges and learn from others as I pursue my project.
