How to Take Notes - IELTS Part 2
In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking exam, where you're given one minute to prepare your response, it's crucial to maximize that time effectively. Hereā€™s a structured approach for taking notes to make the most of that preparation: 1.Ā Avoid Full Sentences Donā€™t waste time writing full sentences. Instead, jot down key phrases, advanced vocabulary, and structures that will help you craft complex sentences on the fly. 2.Ā Write an Advanced Linker or Sentence Trigger Use your notes to include an advanced linker that can prompt a sophisticated sentence structure. For example: - "Even though":Ā Even though I have been studying at home mostly, I would prefer to go to the library if I could. - This is an exception where you might write out a full sentence because it helps trigger the use of advanced grammar likeĀ present perfectĀ andĀ conditionals. 3.Ā Focus on 3 Main General Ideas Choose three general ideas related to the topic. For example, if the topic isĀ hobbies, break it down like this: Main Idea 1:Ā Physical Benefits - Draw branches off this idea and note down specific vocabulary or phrases:keep in shape,Ā stretch out,Ā in good condition,Ā work out Main Idea 2:Ā Relaxation - Phrases:chill out,Ā unplug,Ā destress,Ā disconnect from stress Main Idea 3:Ā Socialization - Phrases:hang out,Ā connect with,Ā develop relationships,Ā deeper friendships 4.Ā Add Key Advanced Grammar Triggers Write down grammar structures you want to use during your answer. Examples: - Present Perfect:Ā I have been doing this hobby for 5 yearsā€¦ - Past Perfect:Ā Before I started working, I had always played footballā€¦ - Passive Voice:Ā This hobby is often enjoyed by people all over the worldā€¦ - Conditionals:Ā If I had more time, I would spend it onā€¦ These notes will help you showcase advanced grammar naturally in your speech. 5.Ā Prepare Sentence Starters Include some key sentence starters or phrases to help you develop your ideas more fluently: - To be honest, I thinkā€¦ - One of the main reasons whyā€¦ - Another benefit of this isā€¦
