Expert Spotlight: Sean Hummel – Sr. Software Engineer and one of the best Engineers I've worked with
Hello everyone!
I'm excited to introduce our next feature in the Expert Spotlight Series—Sean, a Senior Software Engineer at Fluke Corporation. With over 40 years of experience, Sean has an incredibly rich and varied background in software development, having worked across nearly every platform, from low-level device drivers to large-scale applications used by millions of people.
- Professional Background:
Current Role: Senior Software Engineer at Fluke Corporation, where he applies his deep expertise in Python, back-end web development, and distributed systems.
Vast Experience: Over four decades of experience working on desktop platforms (Mac, Windows), device drivers, and web applications. Sean has developed everything from firmware for Firewire devices to video streaming libraries and mobile games.
Notable Career Highlights:
-- Developed software for M-Audio, Big Fish Games, and RealNetworks.
-- Key contributor to Knock and Premera Blue Cross where he led major platform re-designs, including serverless architecture.
-- Has written software for millions of users and contributed to some of the most impactful video and audio technologies over the years.

Deep experience in Flask, Python, iOS Development, Data Engineering, Multithreading, Performance Tuning, and REST APIs.

Started as a Software Tester at Microsoft and Alki Software, eventually moving into development for major companies, including building core systems for embedded devices and game development.
Sean has held key roles at Big Fish Games, Fluke, Knock, and more, leaving a trail of impactful software behind him.
Interests and Personal Experiences:
- Building Electronics: Sean has a passion for building and experimenting with electronics, a skill that aligns with his technical expertise.
- Alaskan Adventures: Sean spent part of his life living in Alaska, where he had fascinating experiences such as meeting Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak when Apple was seeking to introduce their computers into Alaskan schools. He also had a memorable run-in with a polar bear while preparing to board a helicopter and often shares stories of military airplanes flying in cyclone patterns over islands to extend radio communication ranges.
- Cats and Kite Flying: Outside of work, Sean enjoys spending time with his cats and flying kites—unique hobbies that show his creative and lighthearted side.
- Pinball and Cooking: Sean is also an avid pinball player and loves cooking. If you're looking for a fun activity to share with him, pinball or a cooking session would surely pique his interest.
- Video Games: As a veteran software engineer who worked on game development at Big Fish Games, Sean's love for video games is both personal and professional.
- Future Projects: Sean is highly interested in working on IoT platforms, both on the device side and backend server support. This is an area he finds particularly exciting for future endeavors.
