Topic of the Day: Silicon Root of Trust
Silicon Root of Trust
· The Root of Trust is a security concept that initiates a chain of trust to ensure that computers boot with legitimate code.
· The Silicon Root of Trust extends this by embedding a "digital fingerprint" in the silicon chip of a server's hardware to verify the integrity of firmware.
· This fingerprint is immutable and detects any tampering, disabling the server if malicious code is detected to prevent it from running.
· If the Root of Trust is validated, the rest of the BIOS modules are validated through a chain of trust procedure until control is transferred to the operating system or hypervisor.
Test your knowledge: Which principle(s) of the CIA triad are addressed by Silicon Root of Trust – confidentiality, integrity, availability?
