Paprika (A Sonnet)
I know gemstones, I know jubilant stars
Shining in safety, shining brilliantly
And simmering– happy rarities lost,
Drowning in their mirrors. My present home
Is comforting and pure, yet I grieve– why?
Did my dreams die? Am I still precious?
The one solace I have breaks me gently.
I live in war I wasn’t born for– war
That hurts my spirit. I face senseless greed–
Desperate, vicious monsters who make me ache.
I am too tired for passion. Lie me down,
Forget who I am, and fall into skin–
Remember me forever like this, sweetness
Stolen from true love: perfect paprika.
