Lessons Learned: Creating My WBS
Before this week’s assignment, I thought the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) would be a pretty straightforward, small document based on what I’d studied for my PMP. But after diving into it, I now see just how crucial the WBS is in shaping the overall project plan. It’s the backbone that helps ensure all the details are covered, making project planning more thorough and inclusive. I did hit a few bumps along the way, especially when it came to navigating technical IT jargon and figuring out who’s responsible for what deliverable, and what stakeholders need to be involved in such a large-scale project. That said, I’m actually grateful for the challenge—it pushed me to think more critically about roles, responsibilities, and the finer points of project planning. It was a tough but rewarding exercise, and I feel much more prepared for tackling complex projects in the future!

Lessons Learned: Creating My WBS
After going through the exercise of creating a Work Breakdown Structure, I was surprised at how difficult it was for me to break down the actual work without the expertise of a team. Coming from a tech background I understood at a higher level what would be needed to execute this project, but found breaking things into bitesize subtasks down trickier than I originally thought it'd be. I found System Design to be the easiest main task to break down because I’ve had to do that for work. Development was definitely the hardest for me. To me, this emphasizes the need for your project team and SMEs in their respective areas to be able to plan a project effectively.
