We’ve all had that boss: the one who’s always red-faced, barking orders, and about one bad coffee away from snapping. Or maybe you’ve been that boss (no judgment, we’ve all been there). But let’s get real: How do you end up like that? And more importantly, how do you get out of it?
Here are 3 simple ways to steer clear of becoming the stressed-out, overwhelmed boss:
1️⃣ Actually Listen for Once: Wild concept, I know. But put down the phone, make eye contact, and really listen. Not just nodding along while you wait for your turn to talk. You’d be amazed what you learn when you’re not already planning your response.
2️⃣ Don't Give Them The Answer: You don’t need to have all the answers every time. If you always jump in with a solution, your team stops thinking for themselves. So here’s a radical idea: Let them figure it out. You might be surprised at how good people are at finding solutions when they’re not spoon-fed. 3️⃣ Ask Smarter Questions: Your job as a leader isn’t to micromanage, it’s to guide. Instead of playing the oracle role with all the answers, ask questions that help your team find their own solutions. It’s about helping them grow and maybe even coming up with better ideas than you had in mind.
Examples of Smart Questions to Try:
“What do you think the best next step is?”
“How would you handle this if you had all the resources you needed?”
“What’s your gut telling you about this decision?”
If you feel stuck in micromanagement mode and frustration is becoming your default setting, this episode is your ticket out. Tune in, have a laugh, and take away real-world tips to ditch the stress and lead like you mean it.
