So after after starting and ending many different habits overtime, I can pretty confidently share the method that has allowed me to avoid getting burnt out!
Now, a lot of this method comes from the biggest habit I've built.
Going to the gym at least 3 times per week for the last 7 years (besides the few months I couldn't due to a dislocated shoulder rip).
Don't let this fool you though...
The method is very easily translatable to any other habit you want to build sustainably and have for many years to come!
So without further a do, here it is (Check my example at the end to see it in practice):
- Identify the habit you want to start and more specifically, the end goal you want to achieve.
2. Reverse engineer it to understand what you need to do on a daily basis to hit it.
3. Set yourself up for success: Remove anything from your environment that may lead you to break the habit or fail to even start it!
4. Start small... This is a mistake I see 99% of people do. For example, if someone wants to start hitting the gym, the last thing they wanna do is go from no gym, to gym EVERYDAY! Yes, you can do this for a week or two (or maybe a month if you have a strong mentality), but soon enough it will be too big of a leap for you to sustain. So start small... (Check my example at the end)
5. Track the habit: Create a sheet where you can track progress. Bonus points if you make this accessible to a friend/significant other who can help you stay accountable!!
6. Increase slowly: As you get used to the habit, start ramping it up slowly until you've reached the consistency you need to hit your end goal WITHOUT overdoing it!!!
Here's how I'm applying this to my newest habit and goal:
- Recording and posting content on Youtube to create my personal brand and grow my community
2. In this case, I want to get the maximum exposure possible so my aim is to post as frequently as possible whilst maintaining quality. In this case, my aim is to post every other day.
3. I've blocked out time DAILY on my calendar that allows me to solely focus on Youtube. I also make sure to close Skool and put my phone on Do Not Disturb so as to not get distracted and go off on a side quest! On top of that, I batch research, plan, record and edit the videos so I take advantage of "being in the flow" and don't end up leaving anything to the last minute.
4. I started off with 2 videos per week and have now increased it to 3 videos.
5. I have a reminder set on my phone that repeats daily so I can always see it and cross it out. My girlfriend also knows everything I need to do so that throughout the day she can check up on me and at the end of the day, check if I've done it.
6. As I become comfortable with 3 a week, I'll add one more on top!
