the under-rated productivity hack for entrepreneurs (deadlines)
This is a magical thing in productivity that I don't hear mentioned enough ... It's what helped me end my suffering with dreadful unappealing projects that grow even uglier each day I didn't get them done. The magical thing? "Self-imposed deadlines that you actually stick to" Hear me out. As an entrepreneur, the following 2 things ... 1. No external force pushing me to get things done on time, yet 2. I have a strong incentive to do an amazing job on the dreaded task, so i make money from it ... make for a perfect recipe of procrastination or over-analysis on little details that don't matter. I was stuck in such a situation dreading a task for 4 days, each day planning to get it done but not following through because of the above, painfully postponed to the next day ... It was like walking through a tunnel where the light at the end of the tunnel (i.e. the end of the project) does not seem to get closer as you walk towards it ... Of course I was not motivated, since I saw no end in sight! Upon some reflection, I realized - if only I had a guarantee that, today, after 5 hours, i would be free from this abomination & able to move on to enjoy my life, that would be amazing! That whatever i have at the end of the next 5 hours will be published, no matter what ... WHAT A RELIEF that would be! Because now, the light at the end of the tunnel is not moving any more and I can actually start running towards it. How quickly do you get something done when you know it just has to get mailed in within the next X hours, with no recourse whatsoever? Think taxes. They spring you into action not only because there are painful consequences to not doing them but also because you know that you physically cannot push the end date & time of this task (and the suffering it causes) any longer ... because it is set in stone. Thus you work expeditiously. So ... for tasks that you dread, view deadlines as the moment your suffering ends. It is the light at the end of the tunnel that does not move further as you walk. You can see it inch closer and closer ... and you naturally start speeding towards it, just like runners in a marathon can't help but start sprinting when they see the finish line.
