How do I get drums to thump, I'm always losing the feel of it. And my mixes be Madd thin🤦🏾🤦🏾 how do I give drums Definition? A mix for that matter 😒😏 still learning ✌🏿

@Kostja Rohe @Stephen Monaco Hey there. I just wanted to say that I mix in mono and shifting a duplicated track by a few milliseconds doesn't cause phase issues until you shift the audio so much so that the peaks of on waveform begin to overlap with the troughs of the duplicated track or vice versa. My false doubles are always mono compatible. Stephen Monaco, you’re right about how panning the same track left and right will result in a centric sound, but as Kostja politely corrected, I didn’t write that. And you’re also right about processing the duplicated track differently to make the duplicates sound different from each other and more stereo. I do this, as well. With headphones however, Sonarworks is an incredible tool that can help you mix amazingly on headphones. I don’t put down one over the other though. Both Headphones and monitors are great. And yes, Kostja you’re also right about the multitude of ways to create false doubles, or double-tracking. I’ll specify and say “double-tracking” is referred to your example where artists record twice or four times (quad-tracking), “false doubles” is about duplicating tracks (the tip I was making), and ADT involves a delay or reverb to create almost indistinguishable repeats or slap-back to which the onset of the repeats are more identifiable (which I’m confident you know). As an example, I also double track by using a 20-30ms reverb time on an auxiliary of the track I’m trying to add stereo width to. The tips you both wrote are great! But on my initial point, I was just trying to help Moses.

@Kostja Rohe Hi again, Kostja. I wasn’t offended, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with adding on to what someone else said. But I do somewhat feel like yours and Stephen's comments particularly left under my tips were to “one-up” what I wrote, rather than to primarily help Moses. I don’t want compete on who sounds the most educated. I also don’t want to come across as condescending by writing an essay to you (although my response is already kinda long, sorry). But again I’m not offended. And I’m not saying you didn’t help either. What you wrote was great. In all honesty (I really am not trying to say this to be rude in anyway at all), I had a feeling that you would misinterpret my explanation of phase “issues". Like you quoted, I wrote "doesn't cause phase issues until ... the peaks of on waveform begin to overlap with the troughs of the duplicated track or vice versa". But you missed the word “begin”. I wasn’t referring to full alignment phase cancellation. Just the encroachment of one waveforms peaks of the others’ troughs. Phase issues. You’re right about comb filtering. Furthermore, it sounds like your idea of mono compatibility is a purist idea I suppose. Which is fine. With your explanation, a drum kit recorded with 5 mics (lets say), will never be mono compatible because it is not humanly possibly to get the mics in phase to perfection via only a recording engineer and no editing (the way many ‘mono compatible' recordings were made). Phasing is a spectrum rather than a bipolarity. In conclusion, it seems yours and my idea of mono compatibility are different. But I assure you my mixes are not awful in mono. Again, you wrote great tips and I don’t think you’re a bad person or anything. And you’re right again. It’s important for all to understand the implications of every mixing/mastering decision. With that, you can have the teaching stick, Kostja. 😁 I think I will go back to staying in the background in case you thought I was being rude. I won’t bother you anymore.

Soooo, I'm not able to pump my monitors up to hear my music as often (apt/neighbors) so I basically have to mix in headphones ( DT 990 PRO(open back) DT 770 PRO (Closed) My bedroom isn't treated (I'll take a pic, it is what it is) I heard a lot that when mixing u should at the lowest volume, am I correct? Well any tips given I appreciate in advance ✌🏿

@Moses Crump No problem. I don’t think it’s a ’this or that’ kind of thing. You can acoustically treat your room, get Reference ID for headphones and room correction. A bigger space would still give you issues as long as it isn’t treated. I myself would like to get Reference ID to correct my room soon. Also, getting monitor stands to get your monitors at ear level would help, as well. If you can, you can do all of these things at once. I wish I invested more into room correction, but Ref ID for headphones is good enough for me right now.

Logic Pro Overload on a “good” Mac
Hello everyone. Although I like this community, I usually don’t write due to my own shyness. 😅 I’m using Logic 10.4.5 on a mid-2012 Macbook pro, and Logic just constantly overloads. Making music is becoming hard to do when I can barely get through less than 2 seconds of audio. I have a good amount of empty storage space, as well, so it hopefully doesn’t have anything to do with that. Logic also has a frequent tendency to crash. Especially if I’ve downloaded a new plugin. I don’t have an excessively large plugin folder, but maybe it would help to get rid of some free plugins I’ve collected. I don’t use a lot of plugins in my mixes either. Even then, in my performance meter, all processing threads hit 100% fairly quickly. Also, in the performance meter, the processing thread bar furthest to the right is always bouncing around 50% even when nothing is playing back. Mac stats - Core i7 Intel - 16GB of RAM - 1TB SSD - OS Catalina - Mid-2012 I’ve been looking for answers for months. I’ve tried... - Freezing Tracks - Closing other applications - Leaving ReWire off - Increasing Processing threads to "8" - Setting Process buffer range to “Large" - Using Larger Buffer size for Mixing - Turning off WIFI - Turning Off Bluetooth - Bouncing MIDI to Audio before mixing I’m not sure what else to do. I’d appreciate any help. Thanks.

@Fabrizio Sellan Hey Fabrizio. Thanks for your reply. I’ve tried adjusting my I/O buffer size during playing back/mixing. That didn't work. However after looking into everyone’s answers, I had to settle on getting a new Macbook. So far it’s been smooth sailing.

@G B You may be able to find a solution seeing that you’re using an iMac while I was using a macbook pro, but you just may have to get a new laptop. I think part of the issue is that the plugins being created now are a bit more demanding in general.
