@Rick Johnson this is a class that I teach every week with my fingerstyle from scratch coaching group :)
Why Guitar?
Hi all. I’m always interested in other folks story and inspiration and motivation. So my question to everyone is why did you pick up a guitar? What inspired you to say - “I want to do this…” For me, though I’ve always loved music, what inspired me to try my hand at the six-string was binge watching the Beatles documentary ‘Get Back.’ Just watching the creative process of random chords being crafted into chord progressions and eventually phenomenal songs had me in awe. I remember thinking - ‘man, I wish I could do that.’ Then I thought, why not? While I’ll never have Fab-4 success, I can certainly get some personal enjoyment. Shortly after that I signed up for music lessons at a local music store, bought a mahogany 000-Bristol guitar, and started building calluses while trying to keep time. How about y’all?

Mine ultimately comes down to somewhat of a rebellious streak. Everyone else in my family of 9 played clarinet, flute, or piano. And I wanted nothing to do with any of those. I also remember watching Barney (yes the people dinosaur) and they made a guitar out of a Kleenex box, a paper towel holder, and some rubber bands- and even though I was 4 years old-/ I acted fast to make my own- so I think I was drawn to it a long time before I learned how to play it.

Get back is such a great documentary by the way. There was one on Hulu as well— with Rick Rubin and Paul McCartney.
Missing Lesson?
I'm sorry Miss Allie, but it appears Practice Pattern 2 and 'We're Going to be Friends' are the same video (both are identical and say Lesson 7). The next lesson (Practice Pattern 3) is lesson 9. My apologies if it is something I did wrong.

you're spot on-- I just fixed it! Thanks for letting me know
Using a Thumbpick
What are thoughts on using a thumb pick for fingerstyle? I bought one and tried it out, but the base notes really overpower the treble notes (I have no fingernails to speak of), and I miss the correct strings more often than with my bare thumb (which I'm sure is just a practice thing). Thanks 🙂

It's definitely useful for more of the folk style-- tommy emmanuel uses a thumbpick all the time too. Townes Van Zandt uses some for his fingers as well as his thumb, probably to help balance the volume out. Overall thumbpicks are kind of a chore to get used to, but if you're determined and practice with one consistently-- the results will come :)
