What does recruiting do, functionally, for parents?
Been thinking a lot about this question. Most of the time, the parents I encounter don’t care if their kid goes to Alabama or not. What they do get very excited about is having something like a sport that gets their kid excited and interested and invested in their own college process vs. mom/dad hammering them to figure out where they want to go to school. Am I wrong here? My kids are small, college is a ways off, but, I can imagine, if my son loved football and it was something that got him to have better habits in school, do well in class, and got him invested in his future somewhat, that would be more than worth the effort of getting to practice/money and so on on my end, regardless of where he ended up at school. Thoughts?

This question has a lot of layers. You have to know your own kid and (at least try to) help them figure out a reasonable path. Luckily for specialists, there are camps that let them know where they stand and results are mostly definitive. And you can broadly see where kids ranked at their number have been going over the last few years. Then all the other intangibles come in—academics, geographical, size of school, etc. I didn’t really initially care where he went to college or whether he played sports or not. But once he determined his goal, then I did care about helping him get there.

@Brendan Cahill as a first timer it was all hard. The most difficult was finishing the summer camps (after Jr year) and the dance going on between a few coaches and Michael. Trying to let him fully handle the conversations while being reactive to any questions he had. Secondly, there was a point where offers he did have were at schools he didn’t love and would he just straight apply where he did want to go.
Just went through the process
Brendan, I appreciate you putting this together. My son just went through the recruiting process and will be longsnapping at Brown as a freshman in the fall. If I can be a resource to anyone, please feel free to reach out. Anthony

@Tom Spaltholz Hi Tom—he did get invited to Jr day, but chose to do the virtual one instead(we’re CA, travel considerations as well). I would agree with Brendan that film, virtual and staying in touch until camps would make sense if there isn’t an official invite.

Hi Kenneth—it kind of started out as “The Ivies” then Brown definitely showed the most interest. One of the most difficult parts at the beginning was trying to narrow geographies and school levels we were focusing on. Once he decided to focus on higher academic schools it made it much easier.
