I'm coaching Year 7's next year and keen to know of any drills that would help them from getting pushed off the ball so easily when it is in dispute. A couple of my big guys in particular would benefit from better utilising their size rather than getting nudged out of the contest for ground balls. Cheers.

@Chris Kirkwood good luck with it mate ๐Ÿ‘ I found once the kids get their confidence up and realise it's not that bad getting bumped they seem to go to another level.

Yep +1 to this. Other variation to this one I've used is having them in 2 lines facing each other and give them a number each down one side and then do the same down the other (1-5 on the left side and 1-5 on the right). I kick a ball out in between the lines and call a number (e.g. 2) and the number from both sides have to run out and compete for the ball. You can add multiple numbers and even call them at different stages - e.g. start with #1, then add in #4 to help when the ball is in dispute then if it gets tied up you can always add in the next number you choose. Definitely have one side with bibs so they kids don't get confused what team they are on if you go down this path. I've done this with 4 kids and they still get something out of it. As @Todd Gregory said it helps to build comradery and everyone gets to have a bit of a laugh as well especially when the kids forget what number they are. I finish the exercise with calling all the numbers so it becomes an all vs all
Trying to make training fun
Hi All, Last year was my first year coaching and I started the year by getting the kids to draw a card from a shuffled deck. That card became theirs for the year and it was their responsibility to bring it to trainings as kind of a sign in system. The idea was at the start of every training (2 a week) the kids would give me their cards and I'd let who ever had played well or had done something good pick a card. The first picked would get to choose the last drill of the night and the next 3 would be for who gets the final kicks on goals. To try get the kids involved and put a bit of responsibility and ownership of their team, I had 3 coaches cards in the pile and if they were picked then the boys had to do some running at the end (more of them bring their cards the less chance of a coaches card being picked). It was a pretty fun thing to do and i found that the kids all bought into the team structure in a light hearted way while they still got some decent training done. Looking ahead to next year I want to change it up but with the same ownership responsibilities for the boys. Unfortunately some kids lost their cards after a month so I'm after ideas that others might have done similar that have worked. Cheers ๐Ÿ‘

Growing fitness U12 boys
Iโ€™ve used a lot of the kicking drills during the season this year and we got some awesome results from the boys. Improved greatly. Next year Iโ€™m taking on the coach roll of U12 boys side and was looking for some fitness drills for the short pre season we have and into the next year.

I started with a 2km time trial for the boys first up to get their initial level of fitness. Did a few jog (1 min), run (45 secs), walk (1 min) rotations to help with their fatigue running and recovery. Started with these times and then can push out longer if its too easy for the boys. Another one I did was have them run around the centre square clockwise (can be what ever size square you want), this one they run the first line (say it's a 50m x 50m square) 50m at 85%-90% then jog the rest of the sides as an active recovery (150m). Once the hit the start again they take off and run the 2 sides of the square (100m) and then jog the last 100m. Every time they hit the start they run again and pick up the next side of the square until they finish with the full square run at 85%+. I gave them a 5 min rest then went again but in the opposite direction. Few there that worked for my under 14s

All of the above for myself. Looking for ways to improve all aspects of the game for the kids I coach (under 14s). Improvement with their ball movement and skills to hit moving targets for every player. Personally I'd love to work on my kicks to hit the goals from 50m+
