Black Friday
Hi everyone, So what will you be buying this Black Friday in regards to instruments or plugins? For me I might get Jaeger or Nucleus and already bought Damage 2.

Upgraded all my Izotope stuff, so got Ozone 11, Neutron 5, RX11 and Nectar 4 as a bundle which will take care of just about every issue I have! Not splurged on any more sounds though as I'm pretty well covered for those now and still have a lot of underused libraries and synths!
Free AI Mastering tool!
Great video on AI mastering from Benn Jordan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZRV2H4PK0Q The results of his blind test were that human mastering by experts got the most votes as sounding best - BUT....the top AI mastering tool is called Matchering - an open source AI mastering tool that appears to be what subscription tools are plugging into: The GitHub page for Matchering is here: https://github.com/sergree/matchering (for those who are a bit more techy) You can download a desktop version of it at: https://ultimatevocalremover.com/ Yes it's a vocal remover tool but the mastering option is under the menu CHOOSE PROCESS METHOD>AUDIO TOOLS and you can select Matchering. Then you add your track and a reference tracks and it'll do it's magic. It got better results in the blind test than Ozone's auto-mastering (although he only tested the automated version, without human tweaking, which he rated a lot higher). So basically it's not the best possible, but it's a free version of some of the subscription based AI mastering tools - so not for everyone but certainly a useful thing to try out, especially if you're on a tight budget!

@Shawn van Staden FYI I'm finding it very sensitive to the reference track so it worth being picky! I'm also finding it great as an eq matching tool for creative effects...but that's a bit niche!

@Fish Oscine Yeah absolutely, it's more aimed at people who might pay for £5 a track AI mastering services...that there's a free alternative that can produce equivalent results. From my experience matchering seems more like an eq and dynamics matching thing, which can be useful - and judging from Benn's video, he's very experienced and talented so probably instinctively picked a suitable track to match to..whereas people newer to it might not know what to look for!
Volume & Sound Quality! 🎚️🔊
Hello everyone! For those of you working with game music, I'd love to hear your insights on an issue I’m debating with my husband, who’s also in the industry. He has a strong opinion that in-game music should sound great at both low and high volumes, no matter what. He insists that "the music should be so well-mixed that if it's ever played at high volume on big speakers (like at Gamecom conference), that it won’t hurt people's ears." Hmm 🧐 I thought this only applied to trailer music... Honestly, though, I often struggle to achieve that clean, ear-friendly mix when I crank up the volume on my speakers. The mix sounds perfectly balanced at mid-volume, even high volume in headphones, but as soon as I push the volume on speakers, it can sound unpolished or harsh. How do you handle this? Is my husband right, and should I be aiming for that kind of "conference-ready" sound? If so, it looks like I need to dig deeper into final mix techniques. But! some VSTs just sound harsh at high volumes, reducing Frqz only makes the sound tiny and poor. Any advice or tips would be super appreciated!

@Aleksandria Migova I ran a bit of that track through Izotopes Tonal Balance plugin and it seems like the bass is a touch too high and it could do with a little boost at the top end, plus to my ears it sounds like rolling back the reverb would help it sound more up front too. If you brought the bass down and the top up, it would likely make the mids sound stronger too and a dryer sound would give it a bit more power...it's really close though I think, really small tweaks. Hope you don't mind but I recorded a few seconds off Spotify and eq'd it and also used a de-reverb tool to make it a little dryer...sound quality is not great obviously but I hope you can hear/like the difference: https://s.disco.ac/iggtawjozdis first one is the original from Spotify and the second is with the eq changes and reduced reverb. If you did that in the DAW the quality will be way better too, I did it a very rough and ready way haha

@Aleksandria Migova I don't have any acoustic treatment or anything..so I just rely on the tools not 100% my ears! I find Tonal Balance great as I couldn't tell just from my ears what changes needed to be made...and I'd have guessed wrong. But like Alex said the music did it's job, there will always be little improvements that could be made, the client is happy so don't worry about it just try to learn for next time. I had a track from 15 years ago used on tv a few months back and I totally cringe at how it sounds...but if everyone else is happy we just need to accept it!
My first movie gig!!! 🎥
Hello everyone! It's incredible. A couple of years ago, I sent a request out into the Universe, and here I am - scoring for my first movie. It's a testament to the power of believing in "you become what you think." 🌠🌟 I wanted it, and I got it. Now, however, comes the scariest part. I have barely three weeks left until the deadline. 😅 The movie director was supposed to send it to me in January-February, and it was supposed to be about 10 minutes long. But surprise! I received the final cut on Wednesday, and it's 20 minutes long. I have to deliver the music by May 15th, or else he won't be able to submit the application to the Toronto Festival. It's a pivotal moment in my life, and I need to give it my absolute best, right? Could any of you guide me a little? Is there anything specific I should consider on the technical side when writing for a movie? I know there's a 5.1 surround setting for the final mix, but does this mean I have to mix my channels in a specific way, or is the usual L/R panning setting sufficient? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

@Aleksandria Migova ah well I'm glad you got through it and have obviously done a good job! Awesome news with the festival entry! Yes I find the waiting really tough...the one I worked onhas changed name and is still looking for distribution, so it looks like it will be out in 2025 now...I started working on it in Jan 2023! But the poster is amazing and insane: https://film-seekers.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/CIELO-temp-poster_web-1536x2048.jpg
