Truffle of the season on the left, congrats to you both!
pH meter
Would the group recommend getting a pH meter to test soil pH? If so, does anyone have a recommendation of a good meter?

I had a recommendation for this one, Apera PH60. It’s around £90 online. Tbh I think it’s a bit too scientific / too big for what we do most of the time. I bought it in July & not used it much, it’s in the boot of my car rather than in my bag. It’s good for truffle farmers & those into the data. If you are hunting for truffle farmers & have doubts about how much they have limed their soil & why the truffles aren’t appearing then it’s worth considering. In the hierarchy of what I focus on for wild truffle hunting it’s not in the top 5 priorities. Learn to read a soil map & what limestone / chalk looks like before you buy one of these..
Do all varieties of truffle smell the same to dogs ?
I woke this morning with this question on my mind! If you train your dog to find the native British truffle— could they also find other varieties? Please hit me with the answers— happy Sunday

Hi Peter, Tembo my dog finds Tuber Excavatum quite regularly when looking for Aestivum, he’s also found Yellow Nut Truffle, I’ve seen him dig it up, then smell it & almost dismiss it with a shake of the head as if it’s the wrong type. He’s also jumped up at a friend (Julie Stopforth) with white truffle in her pocket & could definitely smell it. I think the VOCs are comparable hence the dogs finding other truffles when hunting for a specific type.

For anyone entering the comp there’s a few pointers on my podcast episode with Ben. Hopefully I’ve got the tech right! https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-truffle-forager-podcast/id1609428702?i=1000645015221

Mycelial Battles in Truffle Orchards!
Hi, I was out yesterday on one of my regular orchard visits, approx. 10 years old & 2nd season producing truffles. We’ve had a good start to the season usually collecting 1kg+ per visit. Yesterday we found only 3 truffles, less than 200g with 3 dogs for about an hour. What was noticeably different was the amount of fungi showing on the floor - Roll rim mushrooms / Paxillus Involutus, so I’m assuming there’s a battle going on between the different Mycellium & the mushrooms are winning at the moment due to weather / time of year. Has anyone else experienced this & how long did it last before the yields were back up? Thx Jon & Tembo.

Yes - the left hand side of the orchard is more productive than the right side, all of the mushrooms were on the left, there were none on the right side..
