Ask a question about AI - I'll answer with a short video
Question Time! I want to create an opportunity to answer the specific questions you currently have about AI with a short explainer video (under 3 minutes) The AI landscape is constantly changing and often brings up a lot of questions for folks as they start to explore this new technology and how it can benefit them and their organization. I want to help make learning to use AI easy and fun while also considering and addressing the new ethical questions that AI brings up. We all win when we can learn from each other, so please ask a question in this thread and I will create a short video to answer as best as I can.

@Kenny Smith Great Question and one that I get a lot. Here are the details you need to know to make a more informed decision about the energy it takes to run AI. A ChatGPT query needs 10 times as much electricity to process as a google search. But how much energy is that acutally? Google Search = 0.3 watt-hours = 2.5 minutes LED Lightbulb = 0.00015 kg of CO2 ChatGPT Query = 2.9 watt-hours = 23 minutes LED Lightbulb = 0.0015 kg of CO2 Eating one hamburger = 4.21 kg of CO2 Flight from DC to New York = 234 KG of CO2 1 hamburger = 2,806 ChatGPT queries 2.5 hour flight = 156,000 ChatGPT queries So on an individual level, it takes very little energy for each query for each single user. But the problem arises when you multiple that times millions of users and multiple millions of queries. And this increased demand for energy is I hope that help you understand a little more and make more informed decisions about using AI. If you want to dig in even more, here are two articles with more details. https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/articles/AI-poised-to-drive-160-increase-in-power-demand?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=What%20A%20Day%3A%20Digital%20pizza%20glue&_kx=NZeDThw0Dkqi476ESYxuYthG7cbLafayZ3okLDeZtow.VVEwpW https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/09/18/energy-ai-use-electricity-water-data-centers/?utm_source=Klaviyo&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=What%20A%20Day%3A%20Digital%20pizza%20glue&_kx=NZeDThw0Dkqi476ESYxuYthG7cbLafayZ3okLDeZtow.VVEwpW
What's your biggest challenge your facing this week?
Happy Monday everyone! I just got back from my trip to Portugal and the world changed a lot in last week. And sadly, nonprofits are going to continue to be asked to do more with less. AI is all about reducing your workload and not be a burden of another thing to learn. Share you biggest challenge you are facing right now this week and lets collectively think of ways to help solve it (maybe with the help of AI)

Hello!
Hi all! I had the pleasure of hearing Kevin speak at the 211 Directors Summit in Alexandria, VA earlier this week. It was such an informative (and fun) presentation. I was very grateful to find such a great resource on AI and how we can intelligently and ethically leverage it for the good of all. Looking forward to learning so much more from this group!

Hi Carla! I am so glad that you found my presentation to be informative and fun! It can be hard to wrap your head around just how big of a change this technology could have on how we work, live, and communicate with each other. I'm curious what your biggest take-a-way was from the presentation? Mind sharing?
AI For Grant Writing: Scoring using AI
HOW TO: Use AI to improve your grant writing by scoring your grant against the rubric and provide suggested improvements It is easy to get bogged down in a complicated grant narrative And forget to compare what you have written directly the rubric To ensure it address the exact points that the reviewers want to see But it is possible to use AI to speed up this process without losing your unique voice and skill as a grant writer. Here's the process I follow: - First, I give AI some initial instructions and context. "You will act as an expert grant reviewer and the goal of this conversation is to improve the grant based on the scoring rubric." - Second, I give it the current draft of my grant narrative. - Third, I copy and paste the scoring rubric. This is key so the AI knows exactly what standards it’s trying to meet. The real power happens when AI scores the draft based on the rubric - It points out where you're doing great - And where there’s room for improvement Lastly, ask the the AI to rewrite the section of the grant with the improvements it identified The most important part of the process is reviewing its suggestions and tweaking them with your expertise. At the end of the day, it’s all about combining AI’s efficiency with human oversight to create a stronger grant narrative. Curious to see how it works? Try following this guide on a grant your working on. It's not always perfect but it can provide some great insights to ultimately let you submit a better grant in less time.

AI For Grant Writing: Scoring using AI

@Michelle Rios Great insights and use of AI. AI can be a great tool for "ideation" since it combines the power of AI with human creativity and really enhances our abilities. I should have more info coming on how to use AI for grant writing since it is such a powerful use case.
Hot Take: AI is too agreeable.
Sometimes you need it to be more contrarian I often have a conversation with nonprofit leaders that goes something like this Can AI do this....Yes Can AI do that....Yes Can AI do ....Yes Basically AI will "Try" to do anything you ask. But the key word is 𝘁𝗿𝘆Every time we make a request, it tries to fulfill it (unless it is wildly unethical) But here’s the thing… Just because AI says yes, doesn’t mean that it’s always right It’s one thing to get an answer, and a whole other thing to trust that answer. The real magic happens when we, as humans, add that extra layer of critical thinking. We get to ask: Is this good? Is it accurate? Is this useful? That’s where our role really comes into play. At the end of the day, AI might be the “say yes machine,” but we’re the ones who decide what’s next. Beware of trusting everything coming out of AI. It can be a slippery slope to losing your ability to critical think for yourself Remember that YOU are the final judge of what AI produces

Does it still get better when you say "this is really important to my job" That is a weird quirk. @Kyle Behrend @Brendan O'Keefe
