Putting in that last 5 percent...
We've all been there. Next time you want to say, "good enough" stop and think about what this decision means in the future. It is never good enough. It is either done right or done wrong. Put in that last 5 percent of effort and power through the pain. You'll never regret doing a better job but you, your clients, and everyone who sees that deck will either be thankful for doing great work or wonder why you fell short. Sometimes bringing something from 95% to 100% is harder than going from 0% to 90%. But its that last 5 percent that separates the good from the great.

Sketchup works great for quick concepting!
Little Deck with a Big Problem
This deck was probably one of the most questionably attached I have ever seen. The deck would bounce up and down at the house connection as you walked by. The house has an LVL rim board and is sheathed with 3/4" particle board. Additionally, there is 1" XPS behind the siding to provide a continuous insulation barrier around the whole house. That means that each bolt going into the LVL had to span 1 3/4" between the back of the ledger and the rim board. To fix this, we had to cut away the insulation and make repairs to the particle board sheathing. Here is a great article going into further depth about this topic: https://www.jlconline.com/deck-builder/installing-deck-ledgers-over-exterior-insulation_o Feel free to ask me any questions on building/enjoying your deck!
