idk if I'l be there or not. Today is Whitney's birthday so we have plans. Unsure what time we will be back.
Youth coaches - what are the most common problems?
On the encouragement of @Chad Bryan - I’ve started developing a “Shooting For Complete Beginners” course. I know what I’ve seen, but what are the biggest pain points for our very beginner shooters that you’ve worked with? Give as many details as you need!

Wow, where to begin. In some sort of basic order here is a brain dump... 1 - we should be encouraging people to train on lower hoops if they are young shooters. I think part of the reason my kids have become good shooters is that they didn't shoot on 10 foot hoops until the off-season before they absolutely had to. 2 - if/when they advance to 10 ft hoops coaches should be diligent about NOT extending range of shots too early. It kills the form. We have to play the long game here. 3 - most new shooters will immediately be 10 toes to the rim. Either because someone (mom/dad/youth coach) taught them to do that or that was just natural instinct. 4 - most new (young) shooters will shoot from their chin/high chest. I see this ALL THE TIME with our 4-7th graders. I'm trying to break the habits. I'm trying to get people to understand that the power generation doesn't come from pushing with the arms but rather the ball speed and dip and body power. ---- putting that dash line there because I think the 1st four items above are CRITICAL above all else with new (young) shooters. other things... 5 - too many shots missed short (never had a chance). More emphasis and work on missing long. I've seen countless times where I tell a girl to "miss it long" and it ends up a perfect shot. 6 - in youth basketball, it is far more common to be getting your shots off the dribble as opposed to off the catch. This includes dribble drives and fast breaks. We should train accordingly (maybe this is just in girls? idk, I don't coach boys at all). 7 - shooting (for new/young players) becomes MUCH less important if they also can't ball handle. From what I have seen in girls youth, if you can shoot but can't dribble your value to the team is quickly minimized. I guess this is related to #6 but I'd incorporate way more ball handling in my shooting workouts for new/younger players. 8 - pet peeve of mine is seeing new/young shooters being told to do 1 handed form shooting. This seems like a giant waste of time to me. They can't handle the ball due to size anyways and it negates any sort of training of dip and power generation. I hate this and will die on this hill. Youth kids shouldn't do 1 handed form shooting.

I'll be there. Maybe off camera for some of it as I won't be at home. I posted a video in another thread. Doesn't have to be THE topic tonight but would appreciate some eyes and feedback on it over there.
