Hotwash/AAR
Since I know Ian is dying for someone to make a post I’ll go. How does everyone do there “hotwash” or after action? I really haven’t been a fan of the way they go at my department. It’s more like “no one got hurt, the fire went out” and it’s normally days after the incident. Sometimes it seems like you can’t make comments without hurting people’s feelings about the decisions they made. Which truly I don’t care about. And maybe that’s a topic or another post. I’ve seen some companies do one literally on scene while it’s still fresh. I’ve been apart of some bigger “jobs” or incidents where I thought maybe company officers or chiefs should have been at the after action to give there perspective on how things went. Would love to hear what everyone out there is doing! Thanks

We typically hotwash back at the station with the larger picture things that you can only get with everyone's perspective. A lot of the scene hotwash that I've seen or engaged in is mostly about specific actions that one would have done differently without putting the big picture in mind (i.e. "I wish I would have masked up here instead of there"). A lot of the station hotwash starts with the apparatus or command officer giving a rundown of how they feel the incident went, then each individual crew member. This seems to work very well in having each individual realize how their actions play into the big picture, from the layout guy to the operator. The most important aspect of this is accountability not only for yourself but your brothers and sisters. If you're in this field for the right reasons, hearing what you did wrong from your peers shouldn't hurt your feelings. If hearing how you can improve does get you butthurt, time to pack it up and move on. LFG.
