How Do You Manage Sick Leave in Your Business? 🤒
Hey everyone! Sick leave can be one of those tricky areas to manage, especially in a small business. With flu season hopefully behind us 🤞, I thought it would be a great time to hear how everyone handles it in their companies. Do you have a formal process or policy in place? Do you require a medical certificate after a certain number of days? How do you balance showing empathy with ensuring the business continues to run smoothly? I’d love to hear your stories—whether it’s what’s worked well or lessons learned the hard way!

We are less strict. We trust our staff and if they need a day off for illness or as a mental health day than we accept that. We do reserve the right to ask for a sick certificate if we think they are taking the piss. I think the last place you want to be is sitting at the GP or emergency room because you are unwell, just to get a sick certificate. I also don't want staff coming to work and making everyone else sick.

As we grow we may need to relook. We have a lot of stress with rosters but less to do with "don't want to work" days and more to do with second jobs encroaching. We provide mainly day supports, so it can be hard to offer full time positions (10-2 is very busy, either side not so much). Other jobs offer more hours and become the priority. If the other provider can't fill their SIL house shift they pressure our staff to fill it leaving us with a huge hole. Similar if they've had a passive overnight with the other provider and it turned into an active we're screwed. They either rock up to work in no condition to work or call in sick because they need to sleep.

I manage the finances for our family business, NADSCARE. We provide disability supports in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
