Corporate America to College-Athletics
The title is self-explanatory, but like all posts here there is a story. When I was in college I wasn't sure what I wanted to do post-graduation. The best thing to do for me then was to fall forward and see where I find myself. I ended up getting an internship at a Fortune 500 company between my Junior and Senior years. I was able to convert that internship into a full-time job upon graduation. I originally was not 100% sold on the job. I was debating whether I wanted to continue my education and earn a Master's degree or make money and gain experience in the workforce. I figured at the time it was better to take the job and gain experience rather than twiddle my thumbs wondering what career I still wanted while in graduate school. I could have learned more about the corporate world while in my Master's program, but I thought there was no better way to learn about what career I wanted than by starting one. After I graduated I started my job a month later. I had a job as an Insurance Underwriter. Most of the days consisted of office work with travel about once every 3-5 weeks. After 8-10 months on the job, I knew it was not for me. There were reasons to stay, but there were plenty more convincing reasons to leave, which I will discuss at another time. So, I had to think of what my next job would be. Backtracking to my high school and college days, I played competitive golf at a high level and always had a passion for the game. While I was looking for a new job I felt like I had an easy choice, my job was going to be in the field I love. So, leading up to the end of my time as an Insurance Underwriter I was looking for careers in golf. After speaking with people in the golf industry it became clear to me that there was no better place to start than in a college golf program. Today, I am in my fourth week as a Graduate Assistant earning my Master's degree while coaching at a Division 1 program. So far, I can confidently say I made the right career move. For me, it all came down to figuring out what my passion was. I hope you know, or at least can find, what your passion is.
