Growing & Scaling a community

To those who are growing those who are growing their free communities, has anyone tried to create a source of income out of it & is currently struggling to do so?

Some have both a free and paid & some like to use 1 free community to funnel into a high-ticket offer.

Anyone struggling to scale into a paid community or just moving their members along to an offer that allows your to provide them a solution & you get paid as a result?
