A great year of podcasting. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ
A great year of podcasting. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ And a fancy new microphone ๐Ÿ˜‚ Two great reasons to make a quick video to thank you. I have to say that 2024 has been an incredible year for us at the Teacher Talking Time podcast. Of course @Leonardo Gomes, @Michael Landry and I are insanely biased, but the guests that came on our show this year were simply incredible. Thank you for listening - it really means a lot. As you all send us comments on our latest episode with Sarah Mercer, it reminds us of the impact and connection discussing teaching has. It's been 6 years of doing the show and we couldn't do it without all of you. We have a great lineup already in store for 2025 (Jennifer Jenkins, John Levis, David Little, and more) but also wanted to appreciate what we put out this year. If you listen to our show, thank you. What was your favourite episode this year? P.S. and how does the mic sound? ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

@Michael Landry absolutely. There are so many of us and podcasts are a great way to bring people together. Excited for another year of recording with you, my friend.
Hello from Iowa, USA!
Hello everyone, I am a teacher entrepreneur working with Spanish speaking adults at beginning and low intermediate levels. I love experimenting with flexible delivery methods to allow my students to improve their English listening and speaking skills at any time of the day, even if they just have a few minutes. This is my 4th year running my own business but I feel like things are just starting to fall in place--it takes longer than you think to figure out what works, because first you have to find a lot of things that don't! I would enjoy connecting with some of you who are just getting started--I really love encouraging new teacherpreneurs in their journey!

Hey @Bethany Anderson! Great to have you here. Big welcome to you. Sounds like you have a cool niche carved out for yourself. It definitely takes time for a business to settle, as you say. "It takes longer than you think to figure out what works, because first you have to find a lot of things that don't!" --> YES! What's your next goal for moving your business forward?

@Bethany Anderson that sounds awesome! There are so many different fulfillment methods other than staring at each other on a computer screen ๐Ÿคฃ. Sounds like a great idea. What's the transformation you offer?
Hello!
Hi, my name is MP (short for Mary-Priscilla). I've been teaching English for Academic Purposes in Toronto, Canada on and off for a few years. I have an idea about creating my own business that supports international students in their English learning journey. I think I have a pretty good idea of my niche, but just don't quite know where to start to make the vision a reality. As others have said, I'd like to find community, support and advice through this network to help me figure out a first step, and maybe even a few more steps after that. Looking forward to being part of this community!

Welcome MP! Very happy to have you with us - and another Torontonian ๐Ÿ™‚. I also teach EAP so the similarities continue. Supporting newcomers is a good start. We alway recommend getting more specific and granular with that scope because their needs are vast and from a business perspective, you likely can't support all of them. Start with Module 2 here which will give you some clarity on that: https://www.skool.com/grassroots-teacherpreneurship-8136/classroom/c8b6e0e6?md=4c1d558fee524a7f85c3e5c3da0efbc8 Try to come up with your problem and solution statement this weekend and we'll go from there. Welcome aboard!

The biggest mistake we see teachers making is overcomplicating things. The best way to avoid that is to follow the 'RULE OF ONES'. โ†’ One offer โ†’ One problem you solve โ†’ One method to solve it โ†’ One way to enroll โ†’ One way to renew And ...โ†’ One happy client ๐Ÿ™ƒ Keep it simple. You've got this! What's your ONE offer? Leave a comment and we'll give you some feedback.

@Barbara Murai Glad you liked it, Barbara! Great to have you here. What's been the biggest hurdle in order to commit to one role? What's behind the transition to teach Japanese? Perhaps there we can find some motivation and develop a strategy.

@Barbara Murai gotcha. In your case, I would choose one offer to run with publicly (marketing) and accept clients on a referral or word-of-mouth basis otherwise so you can keep all those offers. The "rule of ones" is a marketing rule so that you marketing, funnels, emails, and potential clients are crystal clear on what you do and offer. Adding more gets confusing, especially at the beginning. What's your main business goal for the next 6 months?
How to charge more? Be worth it (the Amex model)
American Express is one of the most popular credit cards. And it's the most expensive. It's a good example of being expensive and successful. Amex is pricey on both ends: 1. To have the card, you need to pay a monthly or annual fee 2. Many merchants don't accept it as the transaction fee can be 1-2% higher than other cards. And yet, over 141 million people have an Amex card globally (as of 2023). Users of the card also spend the most on average - more than Visa and Mastercard. So, what's the secret? Benefits. American Express has a slew of benefits for users, especially their points system. Last month I was able to fly Business Class from Paris back to Canada just on Amex points - I didn't pay a cent. Many teachers I speak with are afraid to charge more or of being too expensive for their clients. Amex is a good model - you can be expensive if you're worth it. Have the benefits outweigh the cost and it's a win-win. Here's your task: raise your prices now and brainstorm how you can add even more value to your clients. You got this. If you want to throw some ideas against the wall, comment below or send me a DM. I'm happy to help.
