Thinking About Going Back to School?
It's at least worth doing the math. I recently had a conversation with a close friend of mine about graduate school and thought I would share some two highlights here that are worth researching if you're thinking about going back to school: Beginning with the basics: Degrees. For those of you in the finance or business world, this would be an MBA. In the STEM disciplines, this is often a MS or PhD. Yet picking a degree path, or the 'right' path, can seem like a huge challenge. Herein my advice is the do your research on the terminal degrees available in your field, and to look into options that interest you; looking for a career in analytics? a masters might be right for you. Looking for a senior developer position? you probably need a PhD or equivalent. Optimizing your outcome: Applying, Attending, and Advancing. Once you know your degree path, it's worth identifying schools or programs that offer it. Remember, it's about the degree path, NOT the name of the university. Secondly, one should prep for and take the relevant admissions tests (GRE, MCAT, GMAT, etc) and then cater their list towards schools that match one's scores and undergraduate grades and then apply. In a final note, I have heard it said that "you get out of your schooling what you're willing to put in". In this sense it is important to make a decision whether to accept an offer or to decline. When making such considerations, prioritize calculating ROI, debt, and social factors like moving to a new city. Most of these facets vary person-to-person; spend some time thinking about them, and consider running the numbers. Hopefully you have enjoyed this quick intro--I am more than happy to add specific details on any of the steps I've briefly outlined here. If anyone has questions, please feel free to comment and I'll get back to you! Hope everyone is doing well!
