Reality check on my mix
Hi there! Fix The Mix and Mastering.com - you guys and girls are great! And the community has grown so big! Learned a lot here... Trying to implement what I learned lately in to my mixes and I guess it is time for a "reality check"... I would really appreciate it If some of you guys and girls could take the time and post your opinion about the song on the link. That would mean a lot to me. Hope to hear (read) from you! Regards. https://on.soundcloud.com/DQuYq86cd9bUCdW39

I like this composition. I am in the same boat as you, so FTM has helped me a lot, just as some members on this platform helped me as well. But I also experiment a lot. Maybe do the same. I suggest to set aside a separate mixing session without instrumental adjustments etc. What happens if you just spend some time with the bass and drumkit only. (I love that Klaus Doldinger feel...) Once you have these two elements 'glued' you will find that they can do just fine without the keys. Obviously the keys are the main part, but the 'drive' comes from the bass and kit. What has been said here about the harshness etc is correct. So, I encourage you to just mix the keys. Duplicate the tracks and treat each track differently with eq, gate, compressor and if necessary a clipper. You might feel that you keep only certain phrases/parts on each track. I am saying that because the intensity and dynamics during some phrases call for separate treatment. Send each track to a mix-bus and mix them to your liking. Before that you also might try to separate the lower keys from the high ones (ie left hand - right hand). Just a side note, other percussive add-ons might be better off to be treated separately from the drum parts such as the kabasa. Also, this is my feeling, the mix sounds as if you were looking to get it as loud as possible. Don't be side-tracked with that and leave lots of headroom for all instruments. I hope I did not overstep the boundaries with my suggestions and look forward to another version of this song.

@John Rowley Food for thought: My learned and studied profession was visual artist. I was told by many a professional that 'wow, you can make crap look good!' Shows you that for the majority, folks are not too critical, as long as it meets certain standards that they appreciate. I would say to anyone, after long hours of trying to be technically perfect: Never give up creativity over technicality.
Drum samples.
Is there anyone making their own drum samples? I am making my own by recording the sound of each drum, each cymbal, each rim shot, hi hats open, closed, each shaker (I have lots of them), each cowbell, rattler, soon to be also a Cabasa, and all the notes on the glockenspiel as well as the double-row chimes. Once done with recording, I'll go through and do all the editing and all that other fun stuff that the samples need. This is gonna be a fun project to do. It's an 8 piece set of DW Concept Maple with all new Evans heads along with a 9 piece set of Zildjian Avedis cymbals and other various percussion instruments. Any suggestions on how to make dis happen? Should I bake in the panning information for each track or should I leave them in mono? What would you do? I'd love to hear your opinion. 🤠

holy moley... I just remember there is an old drum kit in my garage. I am tempted to attempt what you are attempting but I think I don't have enough time. In any case, a great thing to do if you have the means!
Are we all sounding the same?
Just came across this video. I know nothing about this gent who was pretty entertaining to watch and also grabbed my attention with content. I think what he points out hits us every day when writing, recording and producing. Have a look and see what you think: https://youtu.be/JZgPKGVJrdc

@Jason Tufts Yes, agreed. But the fear of sounding inadequate eats many of us up. What really is left for us 'regular' musicians? I guess if you can't do mega tours like Swift, or if you can't make kids bop, you failed...

My family is demanding my Christmas wishlist soon. LOL While I use 90% free plugins, I know there are some great paid ones out there. What are your must-haves I should consider adding to the list? Any category.

@Monroe Neese Absolutely a good value. I was tempted 2 years ago to delve into the NORD keyboard selection. No deal there unfortunately, but quality. I ended up with Native Instruments KOMPLETE keyboard (61). So far no regret.
