Politics:
  • The Crypto4Harris group said it is planning eight fundraising events for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign to raise the cryptocurrency industry’s profile with the Harris campaign and push Harris toward pro-crypto policies.
  • According to people familiar with the matter, President Biden is planning to block the purchase of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel Corporation. U.S. Steel said blocking the deal would put thousands of jobs and U.S. Steel’s Pittsburgh, PA headquarters at risk.
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she asked the Biden administration to expel China’s Consulate General Huang Ping after the indictment of a former Hochul aide. The State Department said Huang was not expelled and was scheduled to leave the consulate.
  • President Biden is considering an executive order (EO) to expand restrictions on the number of asylum claims allowed when border encounters rise above 1,500 per day for a week. According to people familiar with the planning, the new EO would restrict asylum claims if there are more than 1,500 encounters per day for several weeks.
  • Ultium Cells LLC voluntarily recognized an effort by employees at its new Spring Hill, TN electric vehicle battery plant to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Inspector General said the EPA must increase vetting for research grants to prevent the theft of technology by the Chinese government. According to the EPA Inspector General, the Chinese government has recruited more than 7,000 scientists, engineers, and finance experts into a “malign foreign talent recruitment program” since 2008 to provide technological and scientific information to China.
  • U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker denied a request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to lift a pause on President Biden’s “Parole In Place” program to provide an expedited path to citizenship for illegal immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens. Campbell also ordered the pause to be extended until 23 September.
  • The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva for laundering $10 million in a Russian campaign the DOJ called “Doppelganger” to influence the 2024 election.
  • The DOJ said it seized 32 internet domains related to “Doppelganger” which were used to “covertly spread Russian propaganda” by impersonating U.S. media outlets.
Taiwan Looking For Recognition at UN This Month:
  • Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is asking its allies in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to rebuke the UN’s "erroneous interpretation of Resolution 2758" in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutterres. The UNGA meets from 10-30 September.
East Coast Port Contract Negotiations Restart:
  • The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and U.S. Maritime Alliance are scheduled to meet today to restart contract negotiations ahead of a possible strike on 1 October.
  • One week of disruption at east coast ports due to a strike could cause a month of shipping delays, according to C.H. Robinson Worldwide’s North American director Mia Ginter.
