Who else has that song "These Dreary Days" stuck in their head?
First off I want to say thank you to @Matthew Mendoza for giving us the chance to work with his tracks. I can't sleep tonight because I hear so many guitar lines in my head that would work so well with that arrangement it's not even funny. I'd like to add an instrumental track or two on guitar just for the sake of working with something new and fresh. Not replacing the vocals with guitar but just adding a nuance of lead in the background for subtle taste and then detonate it in the chorus. Not getting in the way of the vocals but hitting it hard with them to support them. I do have a Baritone guitar to do this with as well as others for other sections of the song. I think it would be a good exercise to help me get back in to the swing of all things audio. Sometimes everyone has to back to basics at least for their own personal musical maintenance. Helps me to remember where I came from and to realize the now and to set goals for the near future to achieve. Anyone else who wants to join in bring it and let's all have some fun together. I'm inspired and hope you are too. Let's do this. 🤠

haha, that's awesome. If anyone wants to try and unstuck it by listening you can hear the released version here: https://open.spotify.com/track/6vrQeEAKOb93Qz53QUZd6P?si=w9DQyuoWQCKw5eMTTMpvog&nd=1&dlsi=f4f956ec7dd34b31 (shameless plug) Not as great as Jake's mix though, need to connect with him to finish that one out,

@Steven Casale Thank so much bro. Glad someone else appreciates a wide variety. I always feel like I'm alienating part of my audience when I'm so eclectic
How do you get a tight low end?
Seems like having a tight low is super important for streaming platforms to sound pro level. What plugins or techniques do you use to get your low end instruments right where they need to be? Having said that, if anyone can recommend a mastering.com video from their library that covers this, I would appreciate the link. Thanks and keep on mixing no matter what!

Low isnt as low as many people think it is. I think people mess with the sub 60 Hz a ton and that's actually what makes things flubbier not tight. For me, I dont like bass guitar down that low for most things so I high pass bass to around 80hz and leave that sub 60Hz stuff to the kick drum to provide chest thump. Other than that, bass doesnt play well with others so that 100-300 Hz range I like to have the bass carry most of and guitars and keys in a dense mix dont really need to be rep'd there much. The inverse of the kick move here, too, these tend to make the kick sound boxy so I'm usually more than happy to let the bass carry notes in the fundamental there, while ducking the kick boxiness in the same region. Basically tightness comes from being surgical and intentional about literally every part of the low freq range.

Joke answer: squats and lunges
These Dreary Days: production
What's up FTM fam? First of all I just want to thank everyone for the kind words you all have been saying about the song used today for this week's Fix The Mix! I was trying to keep an eye on the zoom chat even though I was in and out of the FTM session all day because of my day job but I did see a lot of questions about production and sound capture and thought it might be cool to do a session where I could answer some of those questions and chat about rock production and composition. If you think that would be great, shoot me a message here on skool and/or on socials: Message and/or follow me at: https://www.instagram.com/therealmattmendoza https://www.tiktok.com/@therealmattmendoza https://www.facebook.com/therealmattmendoza By the way, These Dreary Days is a new release of mine that just dropped last week. You can hear my mix here: https://open.spotify.com/track/6vrQeEAKOb93Qz53QUZd6P?si=fd22cc90b4794663 and I'm beyond stoked to hear how master Jake makes the song sound by the end of this week.

New song release!!! Shameless support request.
Would love it if you all gave it a listen and told me what you think. It's an immersive depressive experience. Where in you can feel my existential dread and ponder the point of everything. If that's not inviting, I don't know what is. Oh it's all wrapped up in a 5/4 prog metal tune https://open.spotify.com/track/6vrQeEAKOb93Qz53QUZd6P?si=w9DQyuoWQCKw5eMTTMpvog

Friends! The last 3 Days were so fun! Can we make is OFFICIAL?
Well, that is another great Fix-The-Mix in the books! I really enjoyed working with Jake on this song and I want to thank you all for being there. It was a GREAT time. Congrats to Rueb Scott for making a killer song for us to work on. I felt like this FTM manifested many great conversations and some really MAGIC mixing moments for us to learn from. If you haven't yet, be sure to catch the replays. I also want to say thanks for letting me share my passion with you and speak about our flagship program The Reverse Engineer. These Fix-the-Mix events are the only time I really get to share with you how deeply I feel about our community and program we are building here. I am so excited that so many of you have either joined already or are working to join soon. Listen, I know that investing in yourself can be hard but I will always encourage people to be brave when it comes to self-improvement. Life is short and so we really need to pursue our passions with fervent focus and run wildly towards the things that make us happy. If getting the skills you need to be successful is the obvious next step, don't let anything stop you from finding good education. You'll never regret this move. Many years ago, in a particularly hard time of my life, I faced some major fears (and burdening ego) and chose to invest in myself. It wasn't easy, but the singular act changed everything for me. I hope all of you can move towards that vision for yourself in 2024. If you want to chat with us about how we can help you reach your goals with music production, book a call at the link below. We will decide if it's the right time and a good fit together, and then we will game plan a way to move forward. https://go.mastering.com/post-event-ftm-book Go be great! Caleb Loveless

@Thomas Elliott it is a lot of money but there is no shortage of inspiration and material and learning and community in the program. (and for what it's worth, if you're planning on getting in eventually, I joined a year and change ago and the cost has gone up quite a bit). They are constantly improving the program with new mentors, opportunities, etc so they're putting all of that money to good use.
