Why Do Swimmers Fall Apart Under Pressure?
Youโ€™ve seen it happen. Your kid trains like a champ. Theyโ€™re all fired up for race day. And thenโ€ฆ total meltdown. Why does this happen? For a lot of swimmers, it comes down to one thing: worry. - โ€œWhat if I donโ€™t swim fast?โ€ - โ€œWhat if everyone thinks Iโ€™m terrible?โ€ - โ€œWhat if that kid in the next lane beats me?โ€ Itโ€™s like their brain turns into a hamster on a wheel, running wild with โ€œwhat-ifs.โ€ And when their brain is stuck there, they canโ€™t just swim. Hereโ€™s something else: A lot of this worry is tied to self-esteem. Basically, they believe their value as a person depends on how they perform. If they swim great, theyโ€™re awesome. If they mess up, theyโ€™re a failure. No pressure, right? This leads to overthinking, comparing themselves to everyone else, and choking when it matters most. So whatโ€™s the fix? Self-acceptance. Swimmers who accept themselvesโ€”flaws, bad races, and allโ€”tend to handle pressure way better. Theyโ€™re calmer. More focused. And they actually enjoy racing. Think about the top swimmers. Theyโ€™re not just fast; theyโ€™re confident, humble, and donโ€™t seem to let the pressure get to them. Thatโ€™s because they donโ€™t tie their self-worth to their times. How Can Your Swimmer Build Self-Acceptance? Here are some things that actually help: โœ… Focus on effort and improvement, not just medals or times. โœ… Track workouts to show how far theyโ€™ve come (even little wins). โœ… Set realistic goals that challenge them, but donโ€™t overwhelm them. โœ… Teach them to appreciate swimmingโ€”good races, bad races, and everything in between. โœ… Remind them that swimming isnโ€™t just a sport; itโ€™s something they love. These are small changes, but over time, they can shift the way your swimmer thinks. When they stop worrying about what could go wrong and start trusting themselves, theyโ€™re free to perform their best. But what do YOU think? Does focusing on self-acceptance really help swimmers race better? Or is it unrealistic in a sport thatโ€™s all about winning? Drop your thoughts belowโ€”this is going to be a fun discussion. ๐Ÿ‘‡

@Darcie Rose The exact answer is laid out step by step for you in the Classroom. The short answer is use the 4-2-8-2 Conscious Breathing technique from Michael Phelps that I have been teaching here. That's what everyone starts with at all levels

@Darcie Rose ha that's awesome. how much time did u drop?
4. Olympic Plan Assignment
I absolutely plan to use what we have learned in the anxiety course with our daughter. One roadblock I see us facing is ensuring we are able to be consistent and help her know how to practice 1% better each time to have the biggest impact for her confidence and performance.

@Amy S by "arms are thrown" you mean full stroke?

@Amy S ya ok now I get it. In that case it looks like at this point it's a pure technical thing. So she has to first learn how to actually do it while swimming full stroke. If u can give her feedback, 1 extra training per week doing only that could work. Once she can do it, it becomes mental because at that point it's just about not forgetting it.
comp day 1
today was day 1 of the comp I have been preparing for all season. my last comp to achieve my goals this year and my last chance to qualify for counties in the 200 breaststroke 100m IM - 4 sec pb which I was so happy as I only did it 1month ago 50m breast - 0.6 sec pb which I only just swam it 2 weeks ago so I was glad 200m breast the event that meant the most to me. 3 sec pb๐Ÿฅˆ but 1 sec off my county goal time. I was so annoyed as I have honestly worked harder than anyone and wanted it so bad. even my coach said when I came up to him in September saying I want this county time I was 20 sec away. in 3 months I knocked off 19 sec just ti be 1 sec away. that's what hurts me the most seeing how close I was. the first 100 went amazing and I was 3 sec faster than the split last time I did it. I said to myself when I was seimming that I'm going to get this but I didn't. I felt so defeated I just broke down afterwards as I wanted it so bad and to just get so close was so infuriating. I have another day to go tomorow which includes some of my worst events so that will be fun to try and get through haha but just wanted to share as not everything goes according to plan always

I know it sucks right now and there's nothing that can take that pain away. It's not that you failed, you just failed with the deadline that you set. Life tests us and has its own timeline. I think I'm speaking for everyone here that if you continue improving like you have, getting county times will never be problem again for you in the future.
